Woman sexually attacked while walking along Memorial Drive near Harvard Square

State Police report a Boston woman walking by the Weld Boathouse near JFK Street was attacked early this morning:

At approximately 2 a.m. she was near the Weld Boat House on Memorial Drive when she was approached by a man on a bicycle. As she tried to walk away, the assailant physically and sexually assaulted her. The victim screamed for help; two witnesses in the area heard her and ran toward her, at which point the assailant got back on his bike and fled.

The victim was transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for treatment. She has since been released.

Her attacker is described as white, in his late 20s or early 30s, stocky and with blond or light brown hair.

Anyone with information can call State Police detectives at 617-740-7875.

That deleted comment was definitely "not helpful".

Sadly you can't trust anyone and you have to view most people with suspicion while you're out for a walk or run, even on well-populated routes during daylight hours. Thankfully a good samaritan heard this woman's screams. Seems like more and more criminals are using bikes as a tools to commit heinous assaults. Hope the cops nab this sicko.

...tracked a deleted post made by our forum's most dedicated anti-bike troll (who puts digs against bikes and bikers into almost everything he posts, no matter what the topic).

You missed an earlier (and entirely inappropriate) post that was deleted; your post sounded a little like it might be the same person trying to sneak in through the backdoor, with the bike reference. Apologies.

There have been an increasing amount of vagrants and seedy types in the immediate area of the Weld boathouse. These aren't the usual unfortunate homeless who are part of the Cambridge community, rather they are younger people who are there by choice. They camp in the shadow of the boathouse, leave tons of litter behind (including open containers) and have often have unlicensed and unleashed animals with them. I have witnessed these people naked and defecating by the boathouse. Some of these people have bikes at their camp site. Was it the same people? Probably not, but this is a case where the broken windows theory of policing does have some merit.

This behavior has been reported to the Cambridge and State Police on multiple occasions. Cambridge PD informed me the river is State Police jurisdiction. The State Police never respond to the reports despite having multiple cruisers in the immediately either on construction details or writing tickets to people on their way to work. It would be nice if this area was actively patrolled to ensure public safety. Harvard with their deep pockets could help out as well. I think most tax paying citizens would say they'd rather have young women be able to walk home safely, rather than have officers sitting in cruisers watching what? during the day.

Why am I not surprised? Since the bridge construction switched lanes there are zero lights in that area, it always makes me wary. Just last evening I saw a bicyclist riding over the bridge nearly crash in the darkness when she hit the raised steel plates in the road. She teetered and was forced to dismount in traffic, then walk against the jersey barriers. I'm surprised nobody has been killed there given the lack of lighting, markings & signage, and poor road conditions.

This is unacceptable. After reading this I conclude that during the period of time that various municiple and state gov. boards, agencies, departments, etc., played the "not my authority, please hold" , TRANSFER game, another woman has been attacked.
