Boylston Street salad place re-opens after fixing health-code violations

Sweetgreen reports its Boylston Street outlet passed a health re-inspection and re-opened this afternoon after being shut on Tuesday for a variety of violations.

In a statement, Sweetgreen President and CEO Karen Kelley said:

Over the past several days we have worked closely with the City of Boston and its Health Department to correct the issues raised by inspectors. We want to assure our customers that this was an isolated incident and that we have taken steps to make sure it does not happen again. The safety of our guests is our top priority, and something we take extremely seriously at sweetgreen.

Kelley said that among the steps: Complying with city regulations to ensure there's always somebody on staff familiar with basic restaurant health standards. She said the chain will be assigning similar personnel to the chain's other Boston outlets.

We will work tirelessly to maintain the trust of our community in Boston, and we understand that great communities are built one connection at a time.

They failed 3 inspection in three months. How exactly does that qualify as an isolated incident? Her inference that their employees did not have proper food safety training is shocking. I was stupid enough to stand in line for their mediocre offerings once. The chicken was like sawdust.

I've been there 3 or 4 times - twice this summer on days when I was in Copley and needed something reasonably fast/easy without it being "fast food." I *liked* the salads but I've never been overwhelmed by the place in general (plus, never enough places to sit).

I really prefer the chopped salads (and the many other options) at the Uno Due Go in Downtown Crossing. Sounds like I'll be sticking to that from now on if I'm looking for a decent fast salad.

Just for the record....

They had TWENTY health code violations, with eight of them being critical. I know a lot of people will return to this restaurant, but to put this in perspective, dive bars often only get 5-8 violations. Cheesecake Factory in the Pru only had two violations (1 critical) on their most-recent inspection and the Panera Bread a few blocks away only had 1 violation.

If someone opens a restaurant, but doesn't care enough to teach their employees the importance of proper hand washing, then they deserve to fail.

Storage temperatures and the many procedures involved with safe food handling are secondary. Even little children can learn to wash their hands. If a restaurant can't get that right, you can be sure there are plenty of other things they're doing wrong.

Multiple languages, even! How hard is it to print these things out?

http://www.mass.gov/eohhs/docs/dph/cdc/handwashing/calendar.pdf

These posters and educational materials come from a DPH website, which is included in information that local health inspectors usually give to people getting licenses and inspections. So, "gee how were we supposed to know these things" is not a valid excuse.

I thought it was already required by the board of health to have someone certified in food safety standards in every restaurant, and to do things like log refer temps, check hold temps on hot food, and the like. The fact that it isn't (if that's true) is both shocking and sad.

That's why I made sure to add a note to that effect to Sweetgreen's statement that otherwise makes it sound wonderful that they're bringing somebody on to do that.
