Cambridge company to PetSmart: Who's a bad patent infringer? You are! Yes, you are!

Knotted rubber-ball patent illustration

From the patent.

A Cambridge company says a doggie chew toy sold by PetSmart violated the patent and copyright it holds on a knotted-rubber dog chew toy and so has bopped the chain on the nose with a rolled-up legal complaint.

In a lawsuit filed in US District Court, HandsOnToys, Inc., of Cambridge charges that the Puppies "R" Us Knot Ball Dog Toy sold by PetSmart violates the patient on the Nobbly Wobbly sold by a HandsOnToys licensee.

Although PetSmart stopped selling its allegedly infringing chew toy in March, HandsOnToys says the company still has supplies of the thing in storage.

The local company is seeking to have PetSmart destroy all its remaining Knot Ball Dog Toys and pay triple damages and lawyers' fees.

Complete complaint (1.2M PDF).

I wouldn't buy anything from PetSmart, let along PetCo, if one was paying me to do so. Far too many of their products have proved to be unsafe for pets. When I need to get supplies, and get new toys for my pet Congo African Grey Parrot, Aziza (who's roughly 6.5 years old, now), I'll drive down to the pet store in East Walpole, MA., where I originally purchased her, and get my supplies for her there, even though they're probably somewhat pricier than at PetSmart or PetCo.
