The coolest corner in Roslindale

Ice cream factory and ice company in Roslindale

After you buy your three-gallon tub of ice cream at Puritan on Washington Street, you can go across the street to buy some ice at the Ice Box to keep it cool.

Anyone know their open hours?

How about pricing for this 3 gallon tub?

Thanks in advance!

But they close at 4 p.m., M-F.

Did you see the corn field in front of one of the houses on the street that starts by the Ice Box (I think it is Franklin, but I call it Brookway because, well, the Stony Brook runs under it)?

But will go out in search of it tomorrow, since I'm obviously trying to chronicle all the corn growing in our part of Boston.

Thank god I don't live near there. The last thing I need is ice cream in 3-gallon containers.

The ice cream is delicious. This is one of the oldest businesses in Roslindale. A long time ago, there was a small park on the property

We're going to need a bigger spoon...

My son works there. (Yes he does bring me ice cream - I'm special!)

A 3 gallon container runs about $25.00. Cash. There is no showroom and no display case even though the sign says "retail store."

Depending on how big you scoop, you can get 40-60 servings per tub.

You enter the door and are in an empty space that did once have a freezer. You approach the window and tell them what flavor you want. Then someone will go out to the freezer and retrieve it for you and might even bring it to your car.

The container is cardboard since it expects to be in a generally dry freezer, so if you plan to ice it down you should put it into a plastic bag. A kitchen-type white trash bag works nice. Across the street a 30-Lb bag of ice runs $7.

The container of ice cream measured 9.5 inches across and 10-inches deep.

We (Roslindale Community Center Council) supplied the ice cream from Puritan at the recent National Night Out in Adams Park. I picked it up about 3:30 pm then iced it down. It kept its form for the most part until we ran out - 3 tubs or 9-gallons worth, about 7 PM. You may find that most picnic coolers will fit one pretty well, but measure just to be sure. While it had softened, it still had form, sort of like heavy mashed potatoes.

The last pick up time is 3:30 pm. The office will close and lock about 4:00 pm but they ask that any purchases be done by 3:30 pm. I recommend calling ahead. Those still manufacturing the delicious blends (including cheesecake ice cream - let your imagination wander), can still be in the plant till as late as 7 pm this time of year but cannot conduct a sale. By the way, they do Oreo Cookie ice cream and I know for a fact someone has to stand there to break up the cookies fresh.

Common flavors are usually always available but if you are looking for a special blend that you may know they have can be subject to their production schedule and what they make and have in stock.

Puritan supplies a lot of restaurants in eastern Massachusetts and quite a few ice cream stands throughout the region.

Those places I do know carry Puritan's stuff I've been asked not not say since a few claim to make their own. There are some places that have created special flavors that Puritan will make as well.

And with some bias... I also know that this is a premium set of ice cream blends. This is not the store brand stuff.

While the building looks old outside it is a pretty modern set up inside and has been in the same family since it opened in 1908 and most of the people working there, and owners, within 5 miles of the plant.

You can't get more local than that.

That's so great to have all the history and info. I will definitely have to get some for a party! I especially love that their clients are secret because they claim to make their own!
