Remember in the early 1980s
Remember in the early 1980s 1983 or so Bette midler , Seinfeld, and other famous comedians would call him up and talk live on air , at the time I thought he had a lot of power when it came down to hooking up with the famous, I think out of any local radio personality in New England he had the major connections to Hollywood, and also just about all the musicians from that era knew who mark parentau was, He did have a radio gig in Detroit before coming into Boston, Detroit in the 1970s was a rock n roll town Bob seiger, Peter Wolf recorded a live concert LP in Detroit it was a happening place for hard rock and that's where I think Mark hooked up with many rock stars and record label executives.
As for what he played on air at wbcn it was a wide variety he would play a flock of seaguls followed by take it easy by the Eagles the 2pm to 6 pm radio show wasn't hip enough for the new wave crowd, Oedipus was the man for that, nobody wanted to hear a Journey song after a U2 song that was expected when you were listening to marks show.
By the late 80s ...
He'd totally lost it.
The guy would stop playing a song in the middle to talk about himself and whatever artist was involved with said interrupted song and how important he was for said artist's fame, etc. For me, this was pretty much the end of listening to WBCN. His drug addled narcissistic blather went way beyond Laquidara's annoying (if occasionally quite funny) ADHD excursions, and signal improvements at WFNX became a most welcome relief.
Late 80s
Though Parenteau and Laquidara may have gotten over the top by the late 80s for whatever their reasons, in fairness that's the way all once great FM music stations were headed. Away from the music and more towards what would become the shock jock model. It's a shame. In the early 70s WBCN couldn't be beat for the quality of their programming both in music and news.

Parenteau was big in his own way in this town at one time, as was 'BCN. All gone now. Majority of people around here in 2016 have never heard of him or 'BCN, and rock is no longer the predominant popular music of today's youth
WBCN
'BCN in the 70s was awe inspiring. They had a lot to work with, the music coming out was amazing on a consistent basis. Parenteau even interviewed John Lennon in 1974. I remember the year because Lennon was promoting his "Walls and Bridges" album which came out that year. By the time the 80s rolled around music and WBCN were no longer so great.
