Incoming Roslindale bagel maker needs dough; turns to crowdsourcing to help open deli

UPDATE, 12:38 p.m. Goal met.

Adam Hirsh, known for the bagels he sells at the Egleston Square farmers' market, hopes to raise $60,000 to turn the bagel bakery he's building off Belgrade Avenue in Roslindale into a full-fledged diner.

Hirsh has set a goal of $60,000 by 7 p.m. today. As of 12:05 p.m., 579 people had pledged $58,726.

Hirsh will be renting the old Tables of Contents space near the Bellevue train station to make his artisanal bagels.

With the funds from this campaign, we will outfit what once was a front office space for the previous tenant into a full service dining room with 60 seats, including a counter for the true diner fiends.

Less than $500 dollars away from being funded with 6hrs left at the time I'm writing this comment. They are gonna make it.

We've been watching the campaign and put up a pretty decent chunk of $$ to support them but even just a few days ago they were below 50% funded and we were pretty much convinced it was not going to be successful. Over the past few days there has been a massive outpouring of social media love and it looks like it pushed them over the top.

Welcome to our new rozzie bagel overlords !

{ update } They made it! $60K threshold passed a few mins ag.

Awesome! We gave what we could and I have been sharing it. I hope this will help Belgrade Ave get spruced up a bit!

Boy is that a destination location, at the end of a dead end block next to shuttered commercial block. Can you get there easily from behind the Clay Auto building on your way to T stop?

Still, it's close to as many people walking-wise as say, the Blue Star, so fingers crossed.

There is a very fast easy underpass to the T--maybe one minute walk. I'm sure I'll often grab a bagel and board one stop early now (better chance of getting a seat, too!). But your comment highlights the need to activate more of Belgrade. The walk from Rozzie Village down to Bellevue wouldn't feel so long if it were a commercial lively corridor. It's about the same distance as Davis Square to Teele Square, which is lively and walkable. There is other redevelopment already in the works in the adjacent buildings there.

T access? You mean commuter rail with limited to no weekend access?

Community meeting this tuesday for abutters to see what is proposed for 317 Belgrade. At least I think it is Tuesday- I lost the flyer!
While I am happy for a bagel shop close by, I'm a little hesitant for a 60 seat restaurant... where will they park? Space is limited already on Belgrade and surrounding streets with the couple businesses there and all the commuters who don't want to pay the parking lot fee.

where will they park?

Think of the children!

There's ample on-street parking on Belgrade and the commuter rail lot on weekends when the bulk of their dining-in business will be conducted. It'll be fine.

People who need to park and can't find it won't patronize the restaurant. That is really not my concern. There is a substantial walking distance population that will be able to enjoy dining there. And there is also quite a bit of parking for people willing to actually walk a block or two. And guess what, if it turns out that a restaurant can't survive there without parking, then that's fine, too. An entrepreneur measures risks and makes informed decisions on mitigation. If he has made a mistake, then his restaurant will close, and somebody else with a more viable idea will take over the space.

Nobody has a right to free parking, and nobody has a right to demand that Exodus provide parking just because they think it should be there.
