Jury convicts man of Arborway crash that permanently injured two; faces up to two years in jail

A Brighton Municipal Court jury today convicted Nikloas Papadopoulos of negligent operation - a misdemeanor - for a Sept. 6, 2013 crash that paralyzed a Dorchester man in the pickup he smashed into and put one of his own passengers into a wheelchair with a traumatic brain injury, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

The jury took less than a day to accept prosecutors arguments that Papadopoulos was cruising up the Arborway at more than 20 m.p.h. over the speed limit on Sept. 6, 2013, when he crossed the center line and crashed into a pickup heading the opposite way.

The truck's driver, a 33-year-old Dorchester man, suffered life-altering injuries and can no longer move about or communicate on his own. His passenger, a 34-year-old Quincy man, suffered less serious injuries.

One of Papadopoulos' 14-year-old passengers suffered a traumatic brain injury after being ejected from the vehicle and now uses a wheelchair; the other 14-year-old passenger was seriously injured. Neither was wearing his seatbelt. The 15-year-old passenger suffered less serious injuries.

Papadopoulos will be sentenced Feb. 3.

I'm thankful that by the time my kids are old enough to drive, cars will drive themselves. Male teenagers behind the wheel of overpowered cars is a horrible mix.

By the time your kids are out of college, you'll be more of a danger on the road than they will - the elderly have a crash rate just behind 16 year olds.

Teen drivers have a higher fatality rate than any other age group, including drivers in their seventies and eighties, both by number of drivers and by miles driven. Source: http://imgur.com/ldNBMIZ

And female teenagers are just the model of proper driving technique.

For the permanently disabled: remember that the universe is enormous and has existed for eons. Your lives are but a tiny blip. So the extreme pain and mental anguish you'll feel for the rest of your lives is pretty minuscule compared to the entire universe.

When you look at it this way you can see how it hardly matters how much time the person who took away your lives will spend in one small room. After all, our lives are all pretty insignificant in the entire scope of time. After all, the person who did this to you will die in 80 short years himself.

Hope this helps!

Where along the route was Boston Public Library's Francis X. Moloney killed?...

I mean, even with the construction the West Roxbury District Court is walking distance to the scene.

There are no jurors at West Roxbury court because of the construction. All jury trials are held in Brighton.

husband/father and his family. To be injured so severely in the prime of his life is devastating! WCVB showed when the wife wheeled him into the courtroom. I think they have 2 or 3 kids. Just an awful situation and all because of speeding. So sad.

In my gut, I just can't get over that.

Papadopolus will spend two years in jail at most, yet his victims have to live with their injuries for the rest of their lives.

What a wonderful system of 'justice' we have.

Thank-you so much for your comment! It means so much to me!!!
Misdemeanor.......
In my gut I just can't get over that.
My daughter was killed 18 years ago by a speeding and reckless driver. The Misdemeanor charge has tormented me from the moment I was told about this extremely lenient charge. This is so wrong on so many levels!
