Man learns Charles River not the best way to escape police if you don't have a boat

Sometime after 10:30 p.m., Boston University Police came upon a trespasser in a BU building at 771 Commonwealth Ave. He ran, they chased - right to the banks of the Charles River, into which he jumped, just downstream from the BU Bridge.

As he tried to swim to Cambridge, Boston and State Police arrived, as did Boston and Cambridge firefighters with boats. Troopers in a boat found him, pulled him up and brought him to the Boston side, where, Rob Cant reports, he was put on a stretcher and taken away by Boston EMTs.

If a person leaves the building can he be arrested for trespassing?

Assuming it's a place the public isn't generally allowed, like a dorm or a classroom after the building is shut down, then yes. If it is an area where the public is generally allowed, it's a bit harder to make the charges stick. You become a trespasser when the host decides you aren't welcome.

Not that police don't file charges first and worry about what's legit later.

771 Comm Ave looks like it's the library. I don't know if they require ID for access to the reading area. If they do, you are a trespasser automatically if you are in a restricted area.

Didn't someone else make the same mistake recently?

Do criminals not read UH, and learn from the mistakes of others?
