This morning, Boston School Superintendent Tommy Chang tweeted:
Students, we ❤️ you. You are intelligent & beautiful. We are here for you today & always. Please share your feelings today.
UPDATE: BPS is offering counseling for "students who may be having a difficult time processing any fears or concerns they may have."

Our principal sent out a very heartfelt email this morning. While respecting the democratic process and the fact that students and parents will have different feelings about this election, he assured everyone that a school with many home languages and over 30 national origins will continue to support, educate, and love the kids who go there.
It isn't hysteria and exaggeration that this needed to be said and needed to be heard.

If it weren't for the "2016 elections" tag I honestly would be puzzled about the context of this tweet. I'm glad to hear, however, that this was not about an incident of violence at one of the schools.

BPS has a large population of immigrant students. If you don't understand why he might be concerned about how they're doing after the presidential elections, I can explain it to you.

Nothing to do with the fact that the person who openly slurred, vilified, and threatened several nationalities, ethnic groups and religions has been elected president in part because of his hateful speech.

The fear is real
My kid attends the OBryant and some of her friends were concerned their parents might be deported , although they don't know the status of their parents. Some of the Muslim friends were concerned how a "ban" would impact them.
You've got kids listening to what President Elect Trump has said over the past year and half, not knowing the nuances of government, and that equals fear.
My child, an immigrant, wanted to be sure her citizenship was secure.
So it ain't just about "hugs" and "hurt feelings". This is where we live now.

If their parents are here illegally, there's a chance they could be deported, just like there was 3 days ago. As for her Muslim friends, they're already in the country, so a "ban" would have absolutely no effect.

There are unanswered questions about work visas as well. It's really not clear if and how Trump intends to change our legal immigration policies. For example, if someone is here legally, but not yet a citizen, are they at any more risk of being deported than they were prior to his election? I honestly don't know.

But, it's not like it would happen overnight-if your fears are correct. There's a procedure that must take place.
Stop acting like ICE will be rounding up everyone in January. This is unnecessary.
We need immigration reform and I'm hopeful we'll see something we can all agree on.
Children's Fear
It's not necessarily about top-down executive decisions. Some children may fear Donald Trump, but they may be equally fearful of the attitudes he has emboldened in many of our fellow citizens. There have been many reports around the country of an uptick in overtly bigoted actions in schools after this election.
What Dr. Chang and many principals who sent out notes mean is that regardless of the outcome of this election, bigotry, bullying and hate must not be part of any child's life at their school.

I'm not part of the many groups our president elect has already singled out for discrimination but times like this make Niemoller quite relevant again. I'm having a hard time understanding how more than half of my country can feel that way.
