Nomar not required: Woman swimming in harbor off East Boston gets self out of water

Shortly before 10 p.m., police were alerted to a woman swimming in Boston Harbor off Maverick Square. Arriving officers determined she was OK, but she refused their entreaties to swim towards them and get out of the water. Before the BPD harbor patrol could arrive, however, she decided to listen to them and swam to shore. EMS was requested for an evaluation.

pollution everywhere. That is really disgusting. I know they have cleaned thing up quite a bit but it is a busy harbor and there is garbage all over the place. No....just NO!

At least wait for the Shark Swim and do it the right way.

If you have urgent, feverish thoughts about guns, there are plenty of other posts on the site for you to shoot off in.

If the Mystic River water quality report is any indication (http://mysticriver.org/mystic-swimming-boating/) given the tiny amount of rain we've had this year it seems likely that the water off of East Boston would be reasonably safe to swim in. Of course you do run the substantial risk of being run over by a boat (swimmers are perilously hard to see from the wheel of a mid-sized sailboat), but you probably won't get sick.

I'd completely forgotten about that Nomar story.

What is the Nomah reference?

Even after reading this article, I had no memory of this. I must have been very busy at the time, or those brain cells fell victim to the demon whiskey.
I learn something every day.

Swimming in the harbor isn't a good idea but is it prohibited?

it's a thing!

In terms of real danger, I don't see any mention or indication that she crossed a navigational channel. Isn't that right near the Harborwalk?

Up close & personal with harbor water pollution wouldn't be my choice, but it's not like we've had recent heavy rainfall with its effluent & runoff. Healthy activity for a hot day - good for her for getting out there.

Too bad that she was stopped - and for what, exactly? Swimming in public? I call bs.

Pretty sketchy to be actually be in the harbor after dark.
Extremely unlikely a boat operator would see you.
Probably not illegal but first responders intervene for safety's sake all the time w/o crimes occurring.

Forget the water quality.. thats a busy boat traffic area. Not a good idea. The Charles is a much better idea, but still not a great one.
