One-time high-school football star who says he was molested by Jerry Sandusky is charged with North End stabbing

UPDATE: Bail set at $1 million, but bail revoked on an OUI charge out of Winchendon, DA's office reports.

Boston Police report arresting Anthony Spinelli of Leominster for yesterday's stabbing inside a BHA apartment building at 185 Fulton St.

Spinelli, 44, was arrested this afternoon in Revere and faces arraignment on a charge of armed assault with intent to murder, police say, adding his victim is now expected to survive.

Spinelli was once a star quarterback at Leominster High School who says his life spiraled out of control after he was molested at Penn State in 1988 by football coach Jerry Sandusky. Spinelli was 16 at the time.

In 2002, Spinelli pleaded guilty to manslaughter for a fatal beating in Fitchburg.

In August of this year, a Pennsylvania appeals court dismissed Spinelli's attempt to bring criminal charges against Sandusky because the statute of limitations for the alleged molestation had expired.

Innocent, etc.

if this were a female would the headline include her history of possibly being sexually assaulted in the past?

I think if the woman claimed that the history of sexual assault explained her murderous behavior, just like this unfortunate guy, it would be mentioned in the headline. Aileen Wuornos of Monster infamy comes to mind.

anthony spinelli came forward publicly, and spoke often about the assault. he chose to not do so anonymously, although he had that option. it makes reference to his history fair game. sexual assault victims deserve shielding as a default, but they always have the choice to make that information public, as spinelli did.

And maybe if he hadn't blamed it for everything that has happened in his life since, but he was very public last year when he brought his court action in Pennsylvania and it's obviously a key part of who he is. I suppose I could have gone with the manslaughter angle ("Man who beat somebody to death charged with North End stabbing"), but he blamed that on the Sandusky incident as well.

I think the discussion is important.

Assistant District Attorney Catherine Ham told the court that Spinelli and the victim were known to each other. When Spinelli rang the older man's doorbell, the victim let him in. At some point in the moments that followed, the 6'2", 240-pound Spinelli attacked the significantly smaller victim with a knife, stabbing him repeatedly and causing life-threatening injuries. During a struggle, the victim was able to pull an alarm and escape the assailant's grasp.
