Police: Raging men didn't let the presence of a cop in a cruiser stop them from shooting, stabbing, smashing at Allston bar

UPDATE: Licensing Board found Patron's committed no violation.

A group of men apparently angry another guy talked to one of the women with them at Patron's early on Nov. 26 called in reinforcements to launch a series of assaults that left one man shot, another stabbed and a third smashed in the head with a champagne bottle, a police detective said at a Boston Licensing Board hearing today.

The board decides Thursday whether Patron's, 138 Brighton Ave., could have done anything to prevent the Nov. 26 melee, which also left a bar bouncer with a gash over one eye.

In accounts by a D-14 detective and Patron's owner Marc Berkowitz today, the board heard that when one man "talked to a girl he shouldn't have been talking to," her male companions decided the only appropriate response was a violent beatdown, so they made calls to bring some reinforcements, who stationed themselves right outside the place's front and rear entrances - despite the presence of a Boston cop sitting in a cruiser with its blue lights going in an attempt to minimize closing-time issues at the sometimes troublesome intersection of Brighton and Harvard avenues.

As the night was winding down for the roughly 250 people in Patron's at closing time, somebody opened fire, hitting one man in the upper thigh. Another man was jumped in the parking lot by several guys, who stabbed him repeatedly. Upstairs, a third man was hit in the head with a champagne bottle. The man who was stabbed didn't wait around for an ambulance and somehow got to Beth Israel Hospital - where he was immediately rushed into surgery to deal with his critical injuries.

When police got upstairs, they found chairs and tables strewn about, smashed bottles and glasses everywhere, which seemd to look like a large fight had taken place. Berkowitz, however, said there was no fight, just remnants of panic: "A woman screamed there was a gunshot, and then there was chaos," as people ran for the exits, he said.

The detective told the board two suspects in the shooting were quickly stopped in a car. Officers didn't find a gun in the car, but that's because one of the two had first taken care to throw the gun up on the roof of Blanchards on Harvard Avenue, he said. They were arrested; the gun recovered from the roof, he said.

The men suspected for the other attacks remain at large. Although Patron's has an ID scanner that records the data from IDs, police say several of the troublemakers defeated it by somehow getting their IDs outside, where their associates then used them to gain entry. "They were not quite paying attention to what they were doing, some licenses were being passed around," the detective said.

Berkowitz said when he learned about that lax behavior at the door, he immediately fired the person in charge of security that night. He added he is no longer letting the promoter who organize that night's entertainment use his space.

The men responsible for the stabbing, the bottle smashing and the forehead opening remain at large.

The detective said Berkowitz and his staff were very cooperative with police investigators.

With a "no blacks" sign. But they would get bitched out for that too. It's Kafkaesque.

Not saying they should, but that they could. And I know it's racist, that's the point.

Because no white guy has ever started a fight over a woman in a bar.

Nope. Not ever.

Stick to your autoerotic activities with the LePage appearance tapes, dude.

Who resolve such a dispute by discharging a firearm?

You just asked that question about a city who is most known for a violent gangster named Whitey...

Boston has a long history of white thugs.

And for what it's worth none of the blacks I know own guns whereas I know plenty of white guys with them.

"And for what it's worth none of the blacks I know own guns whereas I know plenty of white guys with them."

I know a lot of white guys with guns.
I know a bunch of black guys with guns.
I know a couple of females that have guns.
Oh, ya, a member of the Pink Pistols...really...

Every one of them has an LTC.

I was responding to the suggestion that blacks are more likely to resort to firearms. It's hard to shoot someone without a gun.

I lost.

I had to take her home.

They could also have stopped it with a "no guys" sign.

Make a person wholly racist? Sometimes black people problems, such as a non-assimilation among white people, are the fault of white people.

The Irish and the Italians became the equal of WASPy white people. When does that happen for black Americans? I don't know precisely when, but I'm certain it's after gun violence as a response to unwanted courtship stops happening.

This is an ugly topic, but ignoring it isn't fixing it.

Keep doubling down on the stupidity, bro. Your IQ must track with the temperature if you really beehive these things.

deny an immutable fact and insult anyone with the temerity to bring it up. Well played!

This is an ugly topic, but ignoring it isn't fixing it.

But you don't have a topic. All you have is a pointless, directionless episode of racist verbal diarrhea. Go clean yourself up and let the polite people pretend it didn't happen.

"Trump supporter or just ignorant racist?"

Nope, just an ignorant leftie. Why don't you just go celebrate Scalia's death? But, please read this first:

Ha. So clever. Yes, I'd make that "logical" conclusion from what was posted and post that very thing.

At least, that's what your school told your mom when they sent the short bus for you.

I'm sure that being white makes you feel special though.

Huh? Scalia has nothing to do with violence in an Allston bar. Stay on topic, chief.

Since the story was about a bar brawl in Boston, and the article makes no mention of the miscreants' names nor ethnicities, the first image that popped into my head as I was reading the article was a gang of Irish/Anglo working-class types brawling in a bar, because that's the common stereotype associated with drunks and fisticuffs, not black people.

You pictured gangbangers. Which I admit I would've done if the story had been about a driveby-style shooting rather than a brawl.

And neither of us have any actual idea who these people are or what they looked like.

Just goes to show how meaningless and misleading relying on stereotypes can be.

Is that supposed to be a scary townie bar? I'm not a dot native and thought it was fine.

Floors are always slick with blood though it's always from a busted lip, not a bullethole. You know, the way it should be - drunk dudes settling their differences with fists, not murderous thugs thugging it up.

Witnessed the occasional fisticuffs outside when I lived in Adams Village, but never felt like it was too rough of a joint. Then again, I mind my own business and don't start things with people. Who doesn't love cheap beer and hot dogs?!

Oh my gosh, clutch your pearls: scary blue-collar working class people! What a fucking nightmare! Any other type of people who frighten you? Like... urban youth of color? gasp! Here's a clue: the city isn't for you. Bye.

Dude ... this is an allston bar. Foosball, Pool, Mexican Food, Craft Beer. Not the usual "Scary Townie" Bar fare. I think you would be hard pressed a townie bar in the entirety of Allston, let alone "Allston Village"

And the victims were in there 30s.

I lived and socialized in that are of Allston for years. There's always been a bit of a shady element that is attracted to these places; remember, that stretch of Comm Ave between about Linden and Warren was notorious for narcotics dealing, and the area near Ringer Park went steadily downhill around 2011 or so.

The types of people who cause bar fights and stabbings have always been around there. They'd pick a bar, cause a fight in it that got the bar shut down, then move to another bar, cause a fight in there that got that bar shut down, and so on and so forth.

The affordable housing and don't-ask-too-many-questions-landlords that appeal to college students also appeal to the types of persons who are inclined to bring guns to a barfight, unfortunately.

Frankly, there's not much the bars legally do to restrict who's allowed to come in, unless they want to get into the business of requiring a bachelor's degree to enter the door or change the bouncer to a TSA agent and run everyone through X-ray machines and metal detectors before entry. This would be odious for the former and onerous for the latter.

Because the Bus Stop was definitely a townie bar when I lived over there (and may still be for all I know). I'm not quite sure where the townies came from, but I felt very out of place the few times I went.

came in here to post something about how even with a cop there, this was going to somehow be the fault of the bar. was curious if perhaps somebody had beaten me to the punch. the comments i got instead were wholly different. amazing work folks!

also, if you're going to be racist, the sign should read "whites only" not "no blacks". its more politically correct, idiot.
