There used to be a heavy transit police presence at night, the police office in the station always has the blinds down and the lights out.

The incident happened at Ashmont & Florida which is a pretty fair distance from the T stop. I don't know if he followed her from there but from the released stills it seems that the investigation included looking at the surveillance video from the station and now there are fairly clear images of the perpetrator so I would be surprised if he isn't picked up soon.

I don't know any better than you but you're jumping to conclusions to say that there was a failure by the MBTA Police as it may have looked like nothing other than two people leaving the station some distance apart until he caught up to her and engaged her at the location of the assault (if I recall correctly he engaged her in conversation before that).

That being said I'm looking forward to the UHub post that reports the perpetrator's arrest.

I used to live in that neighborhood and walk in that direction from Ashmont a lot. It can be pretty quiet at night on the sidewalk, even with the amount of car traffic using Ashmont street as a throughway. This is not the first time someone has been attacked or robbed walking that way. Never had any problems, but I am a 6'3" man...you bet I would have my girlfriend take the line going to North Quincy and pick her up there when she came to visit.

Ash/Florida is a nice neighborhood. Beautiful houses along that stretch of Ashmont, lotta cops and firefighters live near there too. Unfortunately with Ashmont station being a major transit hub, t seems to attract the sketchy. Hell, Transit Police have been RIGHT THERE on directed patrols of the station when people decide to shoot at each other. Not to go too heavy on the conjecture, but it's very likely the victim was followed from the station.

The top half of Florida is pretty good but the bottom is sketchy. When I was looking for a place I said something to my dad about "those shitty apartments at the bottom of Florida" and he said that one of his aunts lived there years ago and they were shitty back then too. If you look at some crime maps of the city it's worse in a stretch from the bottom part of Florida over to Dot Ave than any of the immediately surrounding areas.
