That's a rad copter overhead

Radiation copter

Federal radiation-sensing helicopter.

The National Nuclear Security Administration reminds us today that it has a helicopter flitting above us doing its annual background radiation checks in preparation for the Marathon.

A twin-engine Bell 412 helicopter, operated by the Remote Sensing Laboratory Aerial Measuring System from Joint Base Andrews, will be equipped with radiation sensing technology. The helicopter will fly in a grid pattern over the area at 150 feet (or higher) above the ground surface, at a speed of approximately 80 miles per hour. Flyovers will occur only during daylight hours and are estimated to take about two days to complete.

The measurement of naturally occurring radiation to establish baseline levels is a normal part of security and emergency preparedness. NNSA is making the public aware of the upcoming flights so that citizens who see the low-flying aircraft are not alarmed.

They heard that even the smallest person can change the course of the future.

In fact, they are preparing for that possibility.

Any ideas about what was that extraordinarily loud jet that flew over MIT at a very high speed and was gone a couple hours ago?

Fenway flyover

It was two F16s for a Fenway flyover, and it was badass.

but this morning on my commute out of the city I saw 3 helicopters hovering over (I'm guessing) Winter Hill, or thereabouts. 2 were fairly non-descript, but the third I thought looked a lot like a Blackhawk, but it had retractable landing gear (they were in the stowed position) and the Blackhawk doesn't, I don't think.

Anyway, 3 helicopters hovering over Somerville or far southern Medford this morning was notable.

About 8:45, 2 helicopters flying along ft. point channel and the harbor. Don't think the big one was a Blackhawk, but it looked like a medflight chopper. Definitely had retractable landing gear. Other two looked like news copters (but don't think they were).

It was notable. One was the State Police bird I think. There's been a lot of blackhawk traffic lately, I saw a Yellow H-60 variant over the harbor today, along with the sighting this AM, as well as the NEST bird.

That's probably this MEMA exercise that you saw. Pretty sure I saw the same helicopters this morning.

When I saw them this morning, I knew UHub was going to provide me with, at a minimum, a respectable answer-like statement.

A couple of knowledgeable folks I know said this particular 3 helicopter flight was strictly a photo op for Boston MedFlight. The one that you say looked like a Blackhawk with retractable gear is their S76, which is a cousin to the Blackhawk family of helicopters.
