Real-estate publication endorses Keith in deeds race

Banker & Tradesman says John Keith is the best person to take over the normally obscure office of Suffolk County Register of Deeds.

A seasoned Boston real estate agent, Keith has a general familiarity with how the Registry operates and seems genuinely eager to learn what he doesn’t know.

Keith is running as an independent in next month's election against Democrat Steve Murphy and independents Margherita Ciampa-Coyne and Joe Donnelly.

Something strange and wonderful happened to Doug Bennett's signs. He took them all down! (at least the ones in Dorchester). Based on Doug's new approach, I urge all of you to write in Doug Bennett for Mayor, er.. City Council, er... Register of Deeds!

I saw one somewhere recently, but was pleased that the one I ride by every day (on someone's private property) had been removed.

Many of Doug's infamous Sheriff signs in Dorchester stood for 2 friggin years until Doug painted them over for his "race" for Register. And finally, in the last couple of weeks , Doug removed them, after 2 friggin years.
Thanks Doug, or thanks to whomever threatened Doug with legal action, But really Doug, did I mention that these ugly signs were up for 2 friggin years?

I agree that most of Doug's signs have been taken down. But today I saw one at the corner of Adams and Gibson. A real ugly one.
Doug?
Thanks

I'm curious about the placement of the Murphy signs around Roslindale. There are many on properties which I think are likely rentals - I'd love to know if this is just some old school local real estate person who puts up Murphy signs on all of his properties. I do see some on homes and smaller buildings which I'd guess are being put up by the residents, but I doubt Steve Murphy has that many motivated supporters on Belgrade for example in the triple deckers.

So if someone can do a door-to-door survey of houses with Murphy signs and get back to us on that, I'd appreciate it.

I was taken aback myself when I was in Roslindale yesterday to see all the Murphy signs. If I didn't know better, I would have thought he was a shoe-in for the job. However, his signs are pretty much non-existent outside 02131 & 02136.

I think your assessment is right - many signs are put there are purpose by homeowners while many are stuck where no one lives or cares. I think Steve does much more of the former while Doug did almost exclusively the latter.

but was prevented from doing so when the poll workers wouldn't count my handwritten green plywood ballot.

I had to submit a job for 311 to go clean up the one on the Cambridge St overpass on the Pike.

I drove around way too much this afternoon, so I could not say where, but I definitely saw one.

On the other hand, picking up junior from school, I get to see a Bennett for City Council bumper sticker, complete with photograph.

Of UHub commenting fame, as JohnAKeith? Dude, why aren't you advocating here for yourself?

Anyway I'll vote for anyone who doesn't come with green signs, threats of posses, or a monorail.

He talked openly about it in a recent Keytar Bear thread.

Wait, what? I thought Keith was a serious candidate... too bad.

I think I have been here advocating as much as I can and think is appropriate. I have to respect the owner of this site and defer from touting myself too much. People earn much more respect for a person if someone else does the touting. lol

Commenter 2: I think you were saying it in jest, but in case you weren't, the "not a serious candidate" line is both true and not true. My sincerity and (blunt) honesty are two of my greatest strengths. My sense of humor is up there, too.

My greatest weakness is a lack of confidence. While sitting in the dark in the hours before dawn Sunday morning I thought back to my kick-off party with Keytar Bear and began to laugh. No one else I know would have ever done that, but that's the type of person I am.

Sorry, but Steve Murphy probably doesn't even know what a Keytar is, let alone why a Bear might have one.

This tells me that John is in touch with the common person. He knows why they might need to visit the deed registry and why there's no point in continuing to have this be an elected position. In other words, this isn't one man spouting off at "the gubermint". This is someone who understands the stupid inefficiency and is running on a platform to get that fixed because the position is important, but it's irrelevant to the voting public.

I've known John for over a decade as we are both involved in both South End Real Estate and the South End in general. We don't agree about everything (who does?) but I do know that he is a non-politician that objectively wants to do a good job. In my dealings with him he has always been thorough and professional.

If you are truly looking for a good person to do an honest job, I whole heartedly endorse him for this position.

Thanks, Kevin. I don't remember where we differ but it's very true - we all don't have to agree on everything to agree on some things.

PS. I have lawn signs and literature, everyone!

Will you be mailing literature to residents prior to the election?

Lol. I dunno. I had several people ask for them so figured I'd do it. There was a 50 sign minimum, though, so .. not cheap. (Donations can be made at johnfordeeds.com)

that can paint some cheap signs for you. He's experienced, he's got the plywood, old doors, and the green and white paint.

on many threads related to this.

He is also avoiding specifically dissing other candidates on online forums, which also nice to see.

In case you think your local reps (current/former). aren't just party hacks, just know that people like Consalvo and McCarthy are out there working hard to make sure Steve Murphy can mail it in at another public job. In contrary to their constituents best interests.

I can attest to this. I was personally solicited by both Consalvo and McCarthy to vote for Murphy. Can't wait for my John for Deeds yard sign to arrive. Maybe I'll donate another couple of bucks toward printing costs!

I'd be curious to know if B&T has ever endorsed in any race before. Or is to prospect of the do nothing Murphy (when compared with the expert Keith) sailing into office too much for them to fathom?

Which would make them the USA Today of local media.

Final comment on this thread.

The B&T reporter told me that they don't endorse, regularly, but he inquired to the publisher about doing so in this race, since it made perfect sense, being a Boston-based real estate and finance publication. I hope they cover Register races across the Commonwealth, going forward.
