Red Line stalled due to guy with possible sword; riders hope he's really above board

An inbound Red Line train is being held at Central so police can look for a guy who other riders reported might be holding a sword - even if he's not apparently doing anything threatening with it. The result for other riders is "moderate" delays.

UPDATE, 1:47 p.m.: The sword was plastic. Police told him to be more careful with his toys in the future and Red Line service was set to resume.

Glad he wasn't charged with some bogus crime.

What's next? Panic when a lumberjack takes the T to work with her axe?

Axe-wielding lumberjacks in Boston... stay in school kids.

I saw two guys with the name of a landscaping company on their shirts carrying chainsaws - it was after a big storm. My best guess was that they were going around cutting things up for a truck to pick up later.

She's a lumberjack, so she's okay.

I actually need to transport swords from time to time. If you're not looking for a hassle, the preferred method is to carry them in a bag, and (if asked what's in it) to reply, "Sports equipment". Going all "look at me with my sword" doesn't end well.

...is it actually illegal to possess a sword in public? Because if it's not illegal and he wasn't, you know, brandishing it at someone, why should they stop the train for this?

Dont think it is illegal provided it is not double edged(or does that only apply to knives?). One can lawfully open carry a firearm in MA.

The letter of the MGLs and commonly accepted practice by the authorities are two separate things.

Swords are protected by the 2A but in MA carrying by hand is considered brandishing. If anyone feels threatened (even sheathed) that escalates to an assault charge.

There was a bank robbery in Downtown Crossing (alas, I didn't hear where) and they thought the guy might have tried to escape on the Orange Line.

Everything except the chainsaw if it were full of gasoline no (empty it would be ok) would be legal to bring on the MBTA if properly secured in a container or other otherwise carried in a lawful fashion.
