Seven more arrested at West Roxbury pipeline site

Andrea Doremus Cuetara reports seven people were arrested after stopping construction of the Spectra Energy pipeline near the Deutsches Altenheim Saturday.

That brings the total arrest record to 151 since the trench for the pipeline crossed the West Roxbury line last fall.

Local protesters say putting a high-pressure natural gas pipeline down major streets - Washington and Grove - in a densely populated neighborhood is a recipe for disaster, especially since it ends in a transfer station across the street from a quarry that uses dynamite on a regular basis. The pipeline has also drawn protesters from across New England and the US over the issue of fracking.

What do all these officials have to say about the safety of this project? Are they all politically on the hook?

But Mayor Walsh, Councilor O'Malley and the at-large councilors are all opposed to the project - the city is currently trying (again) to fight it in court.

But the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission does have a report saying it is safe, and they are the agency that oversees all of this.

Also, not every person in the area opposes the pipeline.

Federal Energy Regulating Commission ( FERC) gets ALL of its funding from fossil fuel and fossil fuel infrastructure companies.

And guess who the 5 commissioners are. People who have worked in the fossil fuel industry. Chair of the Commission when it gave permission for the West Roxbury Lateral? Cheryl LaFleur, former CEO of National Grid.

The fox is guarding the henhouse in this situation.

When a regulated industry takes over the agency that regulates it, it's called "regulatory capture," and it's a major part of the business plans of many such industries. See also: Revolving door.

The environmental impact statement FERC relied on was commissioned by Spectra. When residents raised the money and attempted to commission an independent EIS, about 20 contractors (as many as they could find) turned them down for fear of alienating Spectra.
