As South Station commuters learn, AM trips will give them heartburn

MBTA Commuter Rail tweets:

Amtrak does not have an estimated time for restoration of the signal system at South Station. Delays should be anticipated tomorrow.

This was, of course, after a horrible evening commute that mirrored the horrible morning commute - with the main exception being that this time, when a Red Line train died downtown, it didn't gum up the entire Red Line.

Forget the wall, if any of you can come up with a way to fix the T you will prove to America you are worthy of being President

Bernie and Hillary sure, but Donald and Marco would only be rewarded if they killed the T. Republicans and conservatives generally hate public transit and have been working for decades to dismantle it across the country, from decreasing funding (and saying they want to totally defund) Amtrak to a slew of republican governors here and elsewhere cutting service and raising fares. Look at Charlie, conservatives here love him, and he has done more in 14 months to screw up the T than most of his predecessors did their whole terms.

Of course, the biggest thing he did to ruin the MBTA was 16 years ago.

Baker hasn't done anything to the T. All they've done so far is issue reports.

The biggest supporter of public transportation lost badly in his run for president. But I hear he makes a great Turkey soup.

As always we the voters are as much to blame for the T. The issue rarely comes up in state elections and the voters have not held the governor or state reps accountable to the point of costing them their seat.

All presidential candidates talk of roads and bridges... None talk of rails and buses.

The Republicans' constituency largely lives where public transit isn't a thing. The Democrats' constituency largely lives where it is.

An overly simplified, blanket statement, but sure - go for it if it makes you feel better. Both the Muni in SF and MBTA are a disaster and they are in two of the bluest cities in America. But, as always - it's convenient to blame a republican. You guys crack me up.

...first off, in most of the country there aren't enough transit riders to make their numbers felt.

And secondly, how much success are you really going to get when one party pretty much sees mass transit as a plague to be eradicated? Democratic politicians know they don't have to worry about transit voters deserting them - where are they going to go?

Pigeonholing things into the redshirt/blueshirt paradigm makes it easier to not think about things. It's a short-circuit for the lazy.

Republican Charlie Faker spent the morning "ready to strangle someone" about the problems with the T. Now that's real leadership!

There's no backup?

There's no redundancy?

Millions upon millions of dollars spent for security theatre, yet a vital transportation network can be so easily crippled?

Who decided it was a good idea to design the system to be so vulnerable?

The MBTA system will always be toast. Multiple, parallel, tracks should be been put in when the tunnels were first dug. Single track = single point of failure, and no amount of funding increase short of digging up the entire line will fix it.

My recommendation is to buy a car or invest in a comfort bike.

Maybe we can hand out this Onion piece when transit cops put on their bag search show.

Adorable.

Because agencies like the T willingly accept the money. Perhaps if managements stood up and said - we need to change this WASTEFUL system of grants and this NEEDLESS separation of capital vs operational funds, then perhaps we can start to make some inroads into actually improving the transportation service the T is supposed to be providing.
