Is Sullivan's like a polling place?

Line at Sullivan's

If you're in line at the official closing time, will they still let you in? Robert Alvarez shows us the line five minutes before closing today at Sullivan's at Castle Island, which was doing land-office business all day.

H/t Joan Marshall for posing the question.

Looks like they might have paid the rent for the year in one day. God Bless the Democrats!

You suck dude

Also, they've had sweetheart deals since 1951 and are on DCR land which as I understand it is a state org not city.

Since you made it a partisan issue, how many Republican governors have come and gone and are currently in office and also done nothing?

I'm not even a Democrat but just lol.

Edit: btw, I learned all of my cool Sullivan's facts from the very article you linked. I did end up double checking that the DCR was a state organization and my memory did serve me in this case.

Thanks for the name calling, most mature. 45 year lease signed in 1986 under Governor Dukakis (D-Brookline), Senate President Bulger (D-South Boston) and House Speaker Keverian (D-Everett). Harsh penalties if the state breaks the lease before 2031. What did you want the Republican governors to do? Why are you trumpeting that Sullivan's is on DCR, not city property? Of course it is. Who said otherwise?

before dukakis and the other dems signed that deal in 1986

and also why this is such a partisan issue if the four republican governors between 1951 and dukakis allowed them to (ill answer my own question for you) continue paying zero rent.

and as far as me calling you names, yeah kid, you do suck. although not really specifically for this, i really find everything i know about you abhorrent. this was simply the most recent and glaring.

that this is on DCR land is relevant because it clarifies that this is a state issue, not a city: the city hasn't had a republican mayor in almost 100 years, so by its nature it would be the responsibility of one democrat or another. versus the state having plenty of republican governors. including the ones that saw fit to charge zero rent whatsoever.

Last I checked, the Republicans control the executive branch of state government again. And that includes DCR, which owns Castle Island. Remind me when your Republican Governor is planning to announce a rent increase.

According to the article the shenanigans have spanned both R and D administrations. Of course if the rent was high enough to force Sullivan's out there would be public outcry. At least it's a local business and not a Starbucks or a midwest sandwich chain.

It's all peanuts compared to the BRA jackpot given to the Sox.

they have something in common. They have sweetheart deals while the residents of boston get their taxes raised.

Also, both cater to suburbanites and not actual boston residents. Sullivans business comes from the south shore where people moved to when they were priced out of SoBo.

if they want breaks, they should move to where their customers are. Sullivans = Weymouth, Sox = 495 and give tax breaks to business that cater to bostonians.

is to remove tourist attractions

ok, seems like a pretty sound plan

I think you meant where people moved to when busing and integrating public housing forced southie residents to interact with people of color.

where people moved to when they were priced out of SoBo.

what part of "contract" do you not understand? The Democrats do this and then squeal about insufficient funds for social programs. You get to spend a dollar ONCE. Dukakis is revered for his social justice efforts and when money better spent on children goes to the hacks attached to 85% of the legislature, it's the fault of the scarce Republicans called in by frustrated voters to provide a modicum of mitigation. Spare me.

what do you have to say about the four republican governors that allowed sullivan's to pay NO rent between 1951 and 1986. 1986 being the year that the democrats decided that charging rent that goes up 20% every 5 years for 45 years was a good idea.

versus $0

i'd also genuinely like to know what the property was worth in 1986 and if you think that boston's boom was so predictable?

also, for what its worth, given the tremendous amount of people that were lined up outside in the middle of february, i'm ok if the state isn't nickel and diming a business that is CLEARLY providing a well liked service. but thats just my opinion.

The deal the Jacob brothers got from the MBTA for the parking garage at North Station makes the Sullivans and Swan Boat operators look like amateurs.

All the arguments about sweetheart deals and whatnot aside; it was a nice day to wait in line outside.
I don't like hot dogs that much!
