Their cross to bear, at least until they anchor it

New cross going up atop Seaport chapel

Jen Richard watched construction workers install a cross atop the new Our Lady of the Good Voyage chapel in the Seaport this morning. The chapel was moved from its original location on Northern Avenue to make way for one of the many fine luxoprojects going up along the South Boston waterfront.

Krista Easterly also watched the work.

I wonder what the new food trend will be when this building becomes a restaurant in a few years. Laplander cuisine hasn't had its moment....yet.

One great thing that OLGV has always done is the late Sunday evening Mass at 7 pm, always full. Years ago there was the 7 and 8 pm Sunday Mass and the midnight Mass every Saturday night into Sunday with two minute "mini-sermons" by the late, great Rev. Walter J. Martin S.J., Chaplain of the Port of Boston. The midnight Mass was held at the associated old Stella Maris Oratory, a tiny chapel across from Jimmy's Harborside. Stella Maris would be filled to overflowing with police, fire, hospital, newspaper, dock and restaurant workers etc. just getting off work. Father Martin had a special prayer for night workers and mentioned every profession and trade in attendance and played hymns from a cassette tape recorder! It still puzzles me in today's hectic society with Mass attendance down and many people enjoying a late night out on Saturday, most Catholic services are still held very early on Sunday morning. The Archdiocese would do well to look to the example of Fr. Martin and OLGV.
