not a surprise. I just hope there were no people in cars driving through the racing who were affected.

According to local legend, that stretch of ALH has been a drag strip since at least the 1950s.

Back in the day, cars lined up at the traffic light on ALH facing Dorchester and at the change of the light would peel off. Further up ALH a tree was marked at about the 1/4 mile mark and that was the end of the race.

At other times the end, or even the beginning coming back towards Walk Hill, was the traffic signal about 1/2-way between the AL Post (Police Post so-called) and Walk Hill. That traffic signal would have been about where the composting companies are now. The light controlled exits from the Massachusetts State Mental Hospital (as it was called in those days - spare me the politically correct terms, thanks) that was on the grounds there between ALH and Morton Street. People used to cut through the State Hospital Grounds to shorten their drive between ALH and Morton. You could do that well into the 1970s until the grounds closed and the entrance blocked and eventually fenced off. That whole area is all new housing now.

The other popular raceway was Rt 1 outbound at Artie Johnson's Drive-In. It was reminiscent of "Arnolds" on the old "Happy Days" TV series. This would be the intersection of Rt 1 and Everett St. Burger King now sits where Artie's was.

Races of this nature can result in loss of life. That said, we're looking at a decent 65 years of inertia and both state and local police unable to stop it. Fact is, they will just move elsewhere.

That intersection is also well-known (or should be) for people running the red lights in both directions. I never trust a green light there and always stop and look both ways - always. I may risk someone blowing their from behind me but at least I am intact. And yes, I have experienced close calls there proving my decision to stop and look was a good decision.

There are a few of these intersections within a mile of there that get the same cautionary treatment.

Speed signs, speed bumps, raised sidewalks cannot fix carelessness and stupid.

i don't see the reason for trying to tie this accident with street racing.
Shame on you Uhub!!! I always say this is the best source for local news but reading this headline sickened me. Street racing is horrible and illegal no doubt about that, but the people involved in that fatal accident were regular citizens on their way home.

Thank you. That was not a drag race. It was a horrific accident. 1 person gone. 1 person to live with that.
