Barnicle apologizes for declaring Pete Frates dead

Barnicle tweeted this morning that Frates, the man who came up with the Ice Bucket Challenge, had died.

Barnicle deleted his tweet, then tweeted:

CORRECTION: Family friend of Peter Frates told me had passed at 32. He was wrong and I was doubly wrong to tweet it. Thank God I was wrong.

Instead of deserved hammering of me how about $ contribution to Ice Bucket Challenge, support Pete Frates and find ALS cure? #moreproductive

The way they have been talking about him on the radio today almost makes you anticipate that he has passed away.

"Pete Frates, the inspiration behind the millions of dollars raised by the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, has...

been hospitalized at Mass General Hospital."

It was that way a few weeks ago when they announced that Prince Phillip has withdrawn from public life. They gave so much somber introductory information that you *knew* that the bottom line was going to be he had died.

With Pete, he's not such a well known public figure that he would be on the news very often, so you fill in the blank with bad news.

Who is making an excuse for Barnicle? I just made an off-hand comment about why it sounded like that same news was about to come over the radio.

Barnicle has his own issues.

First Mike, now Mike. MSNBC is #FAKENEWS

I'm not saying it, but it's helping anyone who wants to make the case. And it's not like Barnacle doesn't have a track-record.

All in the rush to be "first" on twitter. Just a total asshole. Even if it had been true, who the fuck is Mike Barnicle to "break" that story, let the family tell people themselves. Pete's mom tweeted last night that he was in the hospital, so IF he had passed overnight, I'm guessing they wouldn't have had time to tell the thousands of close friends the Frates have, and those same close friends would have read about Pete's passing from a blowhard plagiarist who is desperate for retweets and mentions. Fuck Barnicle.

Well said.

So how much has Barnicle donated then? Since he's so so concerned that no one holds him responsible for falsely announcing Peter Frates's passing that he attempts to shame people upset by this into donating. Nope, sorry coward. People can donate AND call you out for being the cheap scum that you are! What have YOU donated, MAGA coward!??

Mike Barnicle's battles with the truth are well known. Perhaps his best fiction was a black child and a white child, fighting for their lives but becoming friends at Children's Hospital, ending their parent's racism. Children's had no record of anything close to it.

Trying to be the first to report on Frates reminds me of Barnicle's successor, the Globe's Kevin Cullen who wrote that 8 year-old Martin Richard had just run out onto the finish line to greet his father as dad finished the marathon. Completely false, adding drama to a story that needed no exaggeration. In the earliest stages of their grief, the family had to send out a spokesman to say that wasn't true. No apologies or corrections from the Globe to my knowledge but they submitted themselves for all kinds of awards judged by other "journalists."

The Globe kept and paid highly for the questionable Barnicle for 25 years so I rest my case. That he reported #fakenews again today is no surprise. Age 73? Try retirement.

You mean there's still somebody out there who would actually hire Mike Barnicle as a journalist?

Hard to muster up any thoughts on this because I keep laughing when the name Mike Barnacle is anywhere close to the words Journalistic Integrity.

My father worked in the Globe news room thru the 80's. I'd go by every now and then as a kid. I used to read Barnicle and one day as I was talking to my dad and a couple of his colleagues I asked if he was around and if I could meet him.

They all burst out laughing and one of them said something along the lines of "if we ever see him here we'll let you know."

I grew up in Dot and went to public schools so I knew a few black kids. I remember talking about one of his columns with a friend. He had supposedly interviewed some kids on the corner in Roxbury and the quotes were all this jivey/ ebonics bullshit. I'd never heard anyone talk like that.

I told my friend straight up that he made that shit up and they weren't quotes.

Let's just say I was not surprised in the least that he later got busted for plagiarism. What a bum. Can't believe he can still make a living in media.
