Bostonians know how to get right to the point

Robert Alvarez spotted this request on a fence outside a construction site on Green Street across from Chestnut Avenue in Jamaica Plain today.

Did we loose all of our common decency and begin swearing in public out loud and in writing? My grandmother would have been appalled. Spare me the first amendment speach, you know what I'm talking about. People who swear to make a point, are usually too stupid to do so any other way.

My only hope is that they will get the sign stollen too. They need to chill and enjoy their summer...

the sign-makers spelled all the words correctly.

What the fuck are you talking about?

as we said in the old country, if your grandmother had balls she should would be your grandfather

In your grandmothers day black people had to eat in separate restaurants in the south and gay people would be murdered if they were outed. But they couldn't say fuck on TV so I guess they had common decency?

There's always one, isn't there?

I don't think the amount of "decency" changes across generations; rather, *what* is considered decent changes. Right now we're seeing a shift towards seeing swearing as just not that much of a problem. No sure it will stick, though.

Know your audience and write for them.

also know the difference between "lose" and "loose", and "speech" and "speach" (the latter is nonexistent).

so...

And "stolen" vs. "stollen", which needs to be capitalized because it's a German noun for a fruitcake, much like the ones above.

up

Although it's also a name for a certain type of earthen bunker originally developed by the German Army. I suspect the name derives from the shape of the fruit cake however.......

a devote go to church daily mother of 12 kids used the word "shit" from time to time.

And your point is.....

In regards to people who swear being stupid, you should check this out:

My mother, who is a great-grandmother and over 100 years old, would not use the word, but I have seen her hear it without any pearl-clutching. There were words in common use in her day that would have offended genteel people from a few generations earlier. Standards change. Resistance is futile.

The standard cop-out that lazy people use to justify nearly ANY behavior, no matter whether the behavior provides a positive change to society or not.

The fact is that there has never been ANY legitimate reason for people to casually use expletives in conservation, movies, or TV. To suggest otherwise is just another example of the unfortunate decline in societal norms that has been increasingly going on.

"Smokey?! Get downstairs now! This nice man says you've been swearing again! That's it, you're grounded."

That study only showed that volunteers who had a large vocabulary of regular words also had a large vocabulary of swear words. Presumably they knew a lot of obscure swears, since just about everyone knows the basic four-letter words.

My own experience tells me that well-educated people generally refrain from using their large vocabulary of swears in public, while the least educated are much more likely to use them liberally.

You should hang out with more prep -school-educated women. Fun times. ;-)

You can keep your porta-potties.

Post your parking permits on time.

Almost had my car towed twice last week because assholes made curb side parking permits magically appear the morning of their effective dates, instead of posting them in advance like required.

I'm going to start taking them down when I see that.

Don't take them down. Annotate them with a magic marker: "Permit was posted on 7/11/17. Do not tow before 7/13/17" (or whatever the required advance date is).

And call it in to BTD and ISD. There's some reason to believe that they get annoyed with the repeat abusers of construction permits.

But also pretty crass. Nice example for children walking by: "Mommy/Daddy, what's 'sh*t'?"

I know, I'm a remnant, but it's sad to see yet another social norm disappear.

What kid can read but doesn't know the word shit?

Maybe it's uncouth to print it in public but save the "think of the children" stuff. No kiddie is being courpt on account of a sign.

My parents told me it meant "Sure Happy It's Thursday" and took it in stride when I loudly exclaimed in a fancy restaurant, "That spells--!!" If the kid can read the sign then they've already heard it at school, release your stranglehold on those pearls.

Parents these days need to step up their game.

It's like the hand-wringing over precious Twyler and Calliope not being able to sing all the words to Moana. That never stopped us with with The Lion King. Kids are kids, parents have it no harder today than ever. Get creative and get on with it. Just enjoy the brief time before they start swearing at YOU.

Oooooh, that'll stop them

and wondered who their target audience was. People who would be amused by the note? Probably not going to steal your Porta Potties. People who would go into your (completely opened, not even cyclone-fenced) construction site and steal your copper pipes? Probably not going to be bothered by the sign.

As you say, it's not going to stop real crooks who are stealing for profit. but I think it might dissuade the guy down the street who just needed a few 2 x 4's and figured he'd just grab a couple since "no one would miss them."

World class city doncherknow.

A new study just reconfirmed that swearing correlates with intelligence. Consider it part of Cardigan and Jarosephat's pre-Ivy educational curriculum, free range kids and all that.

But seriously have these concern trolls heard 5 consecutive words out of any single public servant's mouth lately? Kids are gonna hear these words before pre-k, fact. If they don't know what they mean they'll be lagging behind their peers.

Nice one, coming from a "non-verified anon" poster. Isn't that kinda the definition of a troll?

Anyway, we're all grateful for your treatise on the need to teach children to curse so they don't fall behind their peers. Very, er, interesting perspective.

It's so funny to me how registered users treat it like some exclusive honor, as if someone who didn't take 5 minutes to create an account can't possibly have anything valid to say. We anons all bow to you.

"S**t" means the tools or equipment that belong to the crew and may be kept on site in the supervisor's trailer. Stuff, tools/gear or "crap" would have worked...

Our forefathers banded together to block a highway through this neighborhood 40 years ago. I demand we hold public meetings and rallies to protest this sign and it's disgusting creator.

...we've been asking the wrong questions. We should be wanting to know why it appears to say "Don't steal our .shit", which is the worst domain name ever.
