Dorchester man charged with trying to blow up that police cruiser in South Boston

Boston Police report arresting Asim Kieta, 42, of Dorchester, on charges he set off a propane canister next to a police cruiser outside District C-6 in South Boston and set it off.

Police say two officers sustained minor injuries from the resulting explosion; one officer managed to drive the cruiser away after the flames started but before the canister exploded.

Kieta will be arraigned tomorrow in South Boston Municipal Court on charges of assault with intent to murder, assault and batter by means of a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a police officer, arson and possession of an explosive or destructive incendiary device.

Kieta was arrested at 9:30 p.m. on Rutherford Avenue in Charlestown. Boston and State Police shut the City Square ramp to I-93 as they investigated his car.

We picked the Tsarnaevs out of a crowd and captured them in four days. What chance did this guy think he had of eluding arrest?

This guy suffers from severe mental health problems and lacked the ability to consider the consequences of his actions.

I was always afraid that "big brother" with surveillance cameras on every corner would destroy free society. Be able to capture this criminal quickly relied on these cameras. Thumbs up to Big Brother.

If you're not guilty, you have nothing to hide. I want a camera on every corner. To quote the great Fletcher Reed: Stop breaking the law, (expletive).

Sure works well in Russia. Also relevant: "He's on vacation".

We should have fewer laws. I want everything on a public street on camera, but I don't want somebody buying cocaine and/or a trick getting arrested, as long as there aren't kids around.

I ask for few things of my government. Getting criminal acts on tape is one of those few things.

Look at how brazen some of the recent and ongoing corruption.

Surveillance power can be very powerful, and it will be abused.

And the more asymmetric power you let them have, the less checks and balances power there will be to keep them in line.

If you want surveillance, where you should start is by putting the elected officials and their close appointees under 24/7 surveillance, always accessible to the public. Just look at Boston track records, and it makes sense.

You support the BPDs body camera initiatives?

After all, they tend to capture more criminal acts against police than police abuse. Plus, they tend to make everyone involved act a little more respectfully.

Win, win.

When you start getting automatic tickets for speeding or rolling stops or jaywalking, we'll see how sanguine you are about the surveillance state.

When you get mis-identified by a automatic facial recognition system and as a result get put on a watch list without any way to defend yourself.

Sorry, but I don't want people who tout "alternative facts" to have a recording of my every move.

Where does this happen?

Which is kind of my point.

I hope the FBI is joining the BPD on this case. Muslim name and radical jihadi tactics with an attempted propane tank bombing. He should be charged to the fullest extent of our terror laws. I can't help but wonder if the Patriot's Day movie influenced this madman.

He's someone who should be on medication and has a history of mental illness.

It will be interesting to read if he had been planning this attack like a terrorist or just someone who found a propane tank, saw a police car, and figured it be fun to watch it burn.

Obviously needs to be restrained either way.

At least the radical anti-American values part that you demonstrate here routinely.

Complete with "alternative facts" by the shovel full.

I don't think so but I'm no expert.
Seems he has an Arabic given name.
Big deal.
If you saw my full name (very Irish-American) you'd probably assume I was Catholic or at least Christian.
You'd be dead wrong.
The beauty of due process is this guy will get it and so will Trump soon.

Let's hope this guy is put away for awhile so he can't harm or try to harm other people.
