I live in this area, and have had a big problem with package theft for the past couple of months. It wasn't ever an ongoing issue like this, but it seems that any time a package is left outside for an extended period of time, it is always gone. I will definitely keep a look out for this guy! Thanks UniversalHub!

The cops should put a tracking device in an Amazon box and see where it goes.

i can tell you with probably close to 99.9% certainty where they go

do they go?

Generally, the cops use such tactics for the smarter groups who run these jobs in a more professional manner.

Most of these people are flat out stupid, screw up in the short term, and it doesn't take much to find/nail them.

There is also the vigilante route:

Careful with the vigilante route. Booby traps intended to cause bodily harm are illegal.

Looks like just stinky fun.

You don't have to have it explode - dog poop or kitty litter will do nicely on its own. Especially if you leave a bogus note on the top about how there is a transponder buried in the muck that is relaying location. Make them dig!

In any case, do you think one of these scumbags is going to press charges? They would have to admit to a crime and get loads of other charges on their head.

Forget the booby traps and organize a poop box flash mob event in your neighborhood.

Leave out a number of boxes full of liquified dog and cat waste around on your area's stoops and porches all at the same time. It won't just be one box but every box that is full of crap. Someone will get good footage of the perps and they will have such a wonderful day as they open their haul.

Ever wonder how Santa always has gifts?!? 364 days off, without the suit maybe.

Just goes to show you that you can never tell. This guy doesn't look like the "steal a box" type.

Perhaps you could post some pictures of what "steal a box types" do look like, y'know, so we can confront them when we see them.

They usually look like they have stolen the box to pay for drugs.

This guy, as noted below, looks like Bernie.

How do you know he's not a drug user?

In grad school we had to attend a methadone clinic for several days and watch people get dosed. A young man in a camel hair coat came over to talk to us to make sure we knew that addicts come in all shapes sizes and income brackets. He explained that he wasn't rich enough to afford the European detoxes that the higher ups at his bank could.

does that man look like Bernie Sanders??

.. and you still never elaborated on what box-stealing "types" look like.
do go on, we are waiting.

I think I've seen him before. Maybe on TV? Is he from Vermont, Burlington maybe? Wasn't he some kind of politician? Bernie something???

It looks like he just took a box and left the porch.

The homeowner and/or intended box recipient must have given the police the video tape because they are missing an Amazon shipment. Unless you mean the guy is an alleged thief since he is not convicted yet?

English phrasing can sometimes have more than one meaning - especially in headlines whose authors try to use as few words as possible. In this case, you could read the headline as stating that police are accusing the guy of stealing porches, rather than accusing him of stealing packages off of porches.

Thanks. Now that my dense head is clued in to the chuckle, it's a good one!

Are you related to my husband?

If there's a need to have a security camera on the porch, it's a better idea in the future to ship a package to a relative who will be home or the workplace.

Not necessarily a "need" as much as they are dirt cheap these days.

If you have relatives in your neighborhood and/or a workplace that will accept personal packages.

Maybe he wants to see who's at the front door when friends ring the bell, etc.

their logo on the package or - even worse - ship the item in the original box so the whole world knows the contents - that might also reduce the incidence of package theft. Brown box that says Amazon, or box that says XYZ DVD Player is much more of a target than nondescript plain brown box.

there's another good reason to have packages shipped to you at the workplace. Generally, shipping charges are lower if the package is going to a business address as opposed to a residence. UPS calls the extra fee for residential deliveries a "fuel surcharge", which applies even if they can make only right turns to get to your house.
