State Police just reported they've captured James Walker Morales in Somerville. He was arrested by a state trooper who spotted him around 4 p.m., near Foss Park and Wheatland Street.

Trooper Joseph MERRICK spotted MORALES in area of Route 28 in Mystic Avenue. Suspect ran, Trooper pursued on foot for about two blocks.

Trooper Merrick apprehended MORALES as suspect tried to jump a fence in Foss Park neighborhood.

State Police say he was arrested after trying to rob a bank in Somerville, hours after he tried to rob a bank in Central Square in Cambridge. Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone identified the bank as the Citizens Bank branch on Broadway at a press conference after his arrest.

On Dec. 31, Morales escaped a Rhode Island prison, where he was being held while awaiting trial on charges he robbed handguns and rifles from a Worcester armory.

Given his record, "We're just very grateful nobody was hurt," Curtatone said. Earlier in the day, Somerville robo-called residents to ask them to be vigilant and canceled outdoor recesses at local schools. Curtatone added that after the Broadway robbery attempt, he ordered a second call - which he then canceled after learning of the arrest.

Innocent, etc.

Looks like it was the Citizens by Winter Hill Brewery, there were a bunch of police cars (marked and unmarked) there not long ago, then most of them went tearing off toward Foss Park.

But he sure didn't do himself any favors by frequenting his old neighborhood. Happy to hear he'll be back behind bars tonight.

Robbing two banks strikes me as a bad move as well, I mean, for someone trying to keep a low profile.

I agree, I was just thinking the guy has more balls than brains.

Robbing a US armory isn't exactly a genius move. It's right up there with stealing a police car.

Actually stealing a police car isn't really even that serious in the eyes of the law. I've had 2 friends do it on separate occasions, neither served a day in jail
