Man dies in O'Neill Tunnel crash

State Police report a 25-year-old from Everett died after his Altima crashed into the "attenuating barrier" separating the main road from Exit 20 to I-90 around 4:15 a.m.

State Police say the man's passenger, a 26-year-old from Somerville, was taken to Mass. General with minor injuries.

The reason for the crash remains under investigation.

Unfortunately this isn't too surprising, assuming this was at the southbound exit. Almost every time I take that exit I see people swerve last minute, either to take the exit or to avoid taking it. I've seen countless near misses there.

Not really sure what the solution is though, since signs clearly indicate ahead of time which lanes exit. Ideally you'd not have it on the inside of such a sharp curve, but that's kinda a necessity in the tunnel.

According to the State Police report, the accident actually occurred on the northbound lanes of 93 at exit 20, coming from the Southeast Expressway (not in the southbound tunnel), but the setup is the same with the barrier between the two exit lanes and main roadway.

I take the exit 20 southbound to get to work in the morning and also see drivers swerve both ways at the last second to get to or out of that exit so I'm always on alert when I'm in that area. Even if you mistakenly take that exit 20 instead of continuing southbound on 93, that exit will lead you back to 93 southbound at the end of the tunnel and towards the expressway..
