Mayor Walsh Talks About Boston 2030 And His Message For Voters (video)

On June 17, 2017, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh spoke to Steve Pagliuca of Bain Capital and Boston 2024 Olympics about his 13 year plan for Boston and his plan for a second term.

Asked about Boston 2030, Mayor Walsh identified these as priorities:

  • Arts & Culture
  • Transportation*
  • Housing*
  • Economic Development
  • Education
  • Climate Change*

Nowhere on his list was mega sporting events like the Olympics or smaller events like Indy Car or a stadium for The Revolution in Dorchester although elsewhere he maintains we should "try new things." Education also did not make his list of priorities as part of Boston 2030.

Steve Pagliuca: "I know you've made a big priority of jobs and education for those jobs. We have a lot of jobs of the future here in Boston. That requires a highly skilled work force. What are you doing to emphasize education and continuing to improve that here in Boston."

Marty Walsh:

"Well clearly we have world-class college universities here in the city.

What we want to do is make sure that our public education system is world class as well.

Providing opportunities, training young people that when they graduate high school they're either on a pathway to career or a pathway to college.

We have a program now that offers them free community college to get them in the front door. I've worked with the state on another program to continue that education.

We have other universities interested in making sure that we can get these young people that go into community college graduating a 4 year college with less debt than they otherwise would have.

So it really is encouraging, encouraging young people to focus towards college. The education is huge"

Steve Pagliuca: "...What is your message for the next term, for the future, for the next 4 years?"

Marty Walsh:

"I think my message for Bostonians is that you know we have some work to do still on education, on housing and job creation. I think that those are three areas that are important.

My message to the world is that Boston is a global city. I mean we have more direct flights now to international destinations than ever before in our city. We have innovation. We have hospitals. We have technology. We have the right political climate. There's a lot of of great things happening

So you know, I think it's a two-fold. One is to continue to promote the City of Boston around the world, and around the United States of America but also for the people who live here that we still have work to do in some very core areas creating jobs and creating education opportunities and housing and really dealing with income inequality and the challenges that come with that."
