State Police say their South Boston barracks is not calling people up demanding large sums of money

State Police report somebody rigged up a system this afternoon to make hoax calls across the region that appeared to be coming from its South Boston barracks:

When the call recipients answered, they were told to hold for an officer regarding a complaint or warrant that had been issued against them. The “officer” then told the call recipients they were to get money - in some cases several thousand dollars - and meet police at local shopping centers to resolve the matter.

State Polilce say the calls, which showed up as being from 617-740-7710 - were all hoaxes, and that anybody who gets one should just hang up immediately. State Police say that neither they nor any other police department would call somebody up to announce a criminal complaint, let alone then demand money.
