Zoning board dials up new apartments in Chinatown phone building

The Zoning Board of Appeals today approved plans to convert the top three floors of the century-old Verizon switching station at Harrison Avenue and Essex Street into 46 apartments.

Thanks to recent advances in phone switching, Verizon no longer needs all that space. Cresset Development's project has no on-site parking, but its attorney, Joe Hanley, says it has an agreement with the owner of a garage at 1 State St. to rent spaces to tenants.

Seven of the units will be marketed as affordable.

Based on the BPDA docs, the parking will be at 1 Lincoln St aka the State Street Financial Center.

I just wish they would 1) fix that hideous annex building facade on Harrison (which is not in the plans) and 2) fix Harrison Street to be more pedestrian/bike friendly. That triangle is totally pointless since Chauncy St is one way. Apparently the 2010 Chinatown Master Plan mentions redeveloping "Phillips Square," but I can't find that document anywhere.
