The mayor's office says it's not waiting for the results of a pilot study on BPD body cameras - its put $2 million for "permanent adoption of police-worn body cameras" in the proposed budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1.
It's part of an overall security beefup that also includes funding for 30 new Boston Police officers, $2 million more for upgrading security at Boston schools through such things as door locks that actually lock and $2 million for new security cameras at Boston Housing Authority developments.
To try to reduce the number of people contemplating a life of crime, the mayor's budge would also increase funding for city street workers by $1.6 million.

BPD leads the way in community policing soon to be followed by MSP, Are the other police departments that work in the city such as Transit and Massport police going to wear body cameras or will their unions stall the inevitable.

Who’s funding the T’s cameras? The system and buses are already flooded with HD camera’s. I honestly don’t see them as a priority.

So when a trigger happy cop blows you away, I'm sure your family will be upset at the loss of both your life and evidence.

If I lived in a city with lots of bad cops, I'd want them to have body cameras, until I could find a way to move to a better city. Boston has a lot of problems, but BPD is not one of them.

The BPD doesn't shoot people as often as it seems to happen else where, but honestly, that's not really an achievement. Why are they all manning construction sites and not enforcing traffic laws? I never see beat cops and I live a few blocks from a police station. I'd love to see more cops, more attention to issues that really impact us--if we could get people to stop blocking the box in traffic everyone's quality of life would be improved.

We actually don't need cops to enforce speed limits, red light violations and blocking the box issues. All of these could be easily enforced with cameras. Traffic laws will be enforced when it becomes a priority for our elected officials. Don't hold your breath, those traffic tickets cost votes....
Traffic cameras==bad idea

I walk, take the T and don't even own a car. In my strong opinion, traffic cameras are bad way to go for enforcement. The person the car is registered to gets the ticket, not the person behind the wheel. Ever been accused of doing something you didn't do? Sucks don't it?

My understanding is that adding beat cops has not been shown to have any effect on crime.

In most cases, when you talk to the police officer, you're being recorded by the dash cam anyways. This will make sure there are no video blind spots.
Not in Boston.

Not everything needs to be on camera. I'm the furthest thing from a criminal, but I think surveillance cameras are getting a tad out of hand....I don't like the idea of my every move being watched..

The state needs to limit the disclosure of body cam video exclusively to court ordered warrants before I am willing to support them.
As it stands now all interactions with police wearing bodycams are public information.
This is not acceptable to me.

HEY BOSTON POLICE::: No more lies on Reports and oh yea by the way they may need to invest in some Communication classes, because the way the Boston police have talked to me for the last few decades when they jump out the car Swearing, Calling me names and threats of what they would do to my brain with there gun will finally stop. GREAT DAY FOR THE INNER CITY.

The street cops loved the cameras. Didn’t want to give them up at the end of the Pilot. Great for prosecuting public disorder offenses when you can actually show video of the stupidity. And put a quick end to a lot of frivolous complaints.
This is true.
By anon

This is true.
But it also takes all of our discretion away. Despite what the media will tell you, the vast majority of police aren’t assholes looking to jam someone up. So when I stop someone for a minor traffic violation or a suspended license, I usually cut them a break and give them a ride home. We kind of use this as barter on the streets, in the hopes that some day that person you cut a break to will be willing to talk to you if something more serious happens down the line.
The cameras will strip us of that. But if this is what the public wants then we must abide. I have been in two or three situations during my ten years on the streets where I would’ve really loved a camera to protect myself.
