Feeling blue

Blue damselfly

A flock of blue damselflies were hanging out on the shore of Jamaica Pond, on the Parkman Drive side, near the Arborway.

..is actually a damselfly, a close relative to the dragonfly (and is easily mistaken for one). Damselflies have longer, more slender bodies, and fold their wings back and hold them parallel to their bodies when not in flight, whereas dragonflies hold their wings perpendicular to their bodies when at rest.

My pal Internet sez:

a cluster of dragonflies
a business of flies
a hatch of flies

At least a hatch, I reckon, and I can get behind a cluster.

Many, many times I've had them land on my shoulder or hat and stay put for long periods of time, I wonder if perhaps they can sense CO2 the way mosquitoes do and know that if they hang out by humans for a bit, lunch will come around? I prefer to think we have a special bond but will accept the "humans-as-mosquito-bait" thesis. Anybody know about this?
