Former state-senate president resigns as senator

The report released yesterday on Stanley Rosenberg and his now estranged husband left him little choice. His resignation letter.

Kellyanne says it's unfair to even question political figures about their spouses, much less hold them accountable!

(Funny sidenote: autocorrect wanted to change "Kellyanne" to "Pollyanna." Good to see AI developing a sense of humor!)

Node in approval.

Godwin's Law about how internet discussions devolve to evoke Nazi's is nothing compared to how they devolve to evoke Trump.

George W. Bush is obviously to blame.

He should have done it months ago and spared the taxpayers the charade.

Try years. He should have resigned around the first scandal when his husband went around advertising his spousal connections and promised to get access for a fee. The fact Rosenberg would let that happen shows horrible judgement.

I have a husband who likes to show
Lets blame it all on the blow
My power's deplete
l lost my seat
And now I must go

Surely no one (which is to say, everyone) knew things would end badly when he “married” his “husband” 50 years his junior.

Sometimes these things work out just fine.

When they don't, it is just too easy to blame the age difference.

his marriage was a real as anyone else's.

And yes, it was a TERRIBLE marriage but that's nothing do with the gender of his spouse.

I don't think love had a thing to do with it.

You can still love each other but not in the nuclear family sense. I suspect they had a strong affinity for each other or Stan would have dropped the kid a long time ago... plenty of other ladder climbers who would grasp at the chance to bed the Senate President if given the chance.

The real issue people had was he was using the power for his own purposes, not to advance his husbands agenda and he was touching people. When you look at other political spouses we have many who get involved in their husbands agenda and do so very directly but they tend to be on the same page as their husband and they generally do not try to get sex out of other people out of it either.

I knew things were in for a serious showdown when his husband threw his name in the ring for the North End Senate seat when it opened up. Even though it was very short lived in made people go ape shit because the residency requirements would make no sense if he and his husband were both in the Senate in districts across the state from each other. The people who were most upset about it though were gay people because we felt he was making a mockery out of an institution that we have been fighting to have for decades by trying to say they could both be married but hold residency in two different areas.

Of a variety of gender combinations. Especially common in academia, where it can be very difficult to find jobs in the same metro area. One co-worker's husband lives 1000 miles away and they mainly see each other weekends.

And people find that to be odd... I am not saying it is but look at all the tongue wagging every time someone talks about Bill and Hillary having separate bedrooms or the same with Trump and Melania. Heck when Melania decided to hang out in NYC for a few extra months people could not comprehend how a married couple could possibly be apart for more than 5 minutes.

Part of being a representative is laying claim to being part of that community. I just do not see how one could make that claim if their husband is doing the same thing 100 miles away. There is a reason why that went away so fast but it was telling of the nature of his ambitions.

That was totally normal - separate bedrooms or separate beds - with my grandparents' generation.

From a footnote in the ethics report:

One witness offered the following example: Hefner announced to a reporter on December 14, 2015 that he intended to run for Senate to fill a vacancy recently announced by an outgoing Senator. Hefner did this without consulting with Senator Rosenberg’s staff, who only learned of his announcement after the fact. Similarly, in November 2015, Hefner sent a series of text messages to a staff member stating that Hefner was going to run against Senator Rosenberg in the upcoming primary to “embarrass him to the point of resignation.” Hefner disparaged
Senator Rosenberg, referring to him in demeaning and profane terms as a weak and ineffective leader.

None of these things are any of our business.

The public acts for which were improper? Those are our business. Stick to that.

As a gay guy, I agree.

Fine someone can be with someone older,. but that large of a gap? Come on. Byron was looking for an opportunity and saw it in Stan. So he took it.

Byron is an opportunist. He wasn't into Stan because he thought Stan had a great body. No, he wanted something Stan had.. power.

Go ahead and flame me for this comment. I don't care. I'm old enough to know this is the truth. I wish I had a dollar for every time I've seen someone get married only for an opportunity, not for love, I'd be rich. Happens far more than you think.

When I was younger we had a term for it: power fucker. As in "You are surprised that she's engaged to the VP of operations? Why? Diana has always been a power fucker."

Although our concern for such things should be limited to those public acts which are actionable, not to the details of their relationship. I say that as someone who was told repeatedly that I shouldn't have any male friends or any interests aside from my husband or my marriage would never last. 28 years later ...

It was that he was 19 when he met Rosenberg...and his employee.

"actionable"

Not the stupid business jargon version of the word, either - the legal definition.

Plenty of people, gay and straight, manage to make it work without setting off any alarms though!

Obviously Hef over calculated just how powerful his SugarPapa was. Otherwise he would have been happy with the high paying PR job he landed. He could have become known as the host of wonderful parties that everyone would go to because his husband would be there and he could have built himself an empire off of that alone leading to a run of his own in just a few years when Stan went to retire.

I honestly do not begrudge either of them for the arrangement. I begrudge them for messing it up so royally.

He resigned instead of being removed from office. He should have been tossed out but wasn't.

Lots of his former supporters made statements saying he should resign.

But I feel worse for the victims of his husband. I am also disgusted with our leaders up at the state house who are shocked that sexual harassment exist in the Golden Dome.

I don't watch anything on prime time but this 80 page report would write the first couple of seasons of an award winning drama, at least. Not just because of Rosenberg and Hefner but the untold or redacted stories of the office staff, drivers, victims, other legislators and all of those stories not covered by the investigation. Plus the story isn't finished. Where does Rosenberg go from here? What will become of Hefner, likely released on probation if convicted? The best may be yet to come.

I can only imagine the psychological torture and physical stress of the office staff. Here's Rosenberg, considered to be a decent, competent guy basically being manipulated like a puppet on a string by a crazed twenty something boy-toy while the loyal staff is working full-time putting out Hefner's fires. I can imagine the water cooler talk or barroom talk after work. No fan of Rosenberg's politics but I definitely have sympathy for the staff and all of the victims. Stay tuned.
