Keytar Bear gets his own beer; some of the proceeds to help him recover from motorcycle accident

Mass Live reports on Trillium Brewing Co.'s newest offering, which is called, no, not Keytar Beer, but Keytar Bear Double IPA. Part of the proceeds will go to the Bear, currently recovering from a motorcycle wipeout that left him with various injuries.

Guy gets so much love for pretending to play a keytar.

It'a amazing how much joy people get from just seeing him on the street (well, not you, obviously, not with that dark cloud that seems to follow you around everywhere).

New York has (had?) a naked cowboy who wasn't really naked and was pretty grumpy, to boot. We have a guy in a teddy-bear outfit who makes people smile. I know which one I'll take. New York can stay grumpy.

about music you would see that he's actually playing, quite well, to a synth track, and doing a pretty damn good job of cheering up even the grumpy people like myself

um, duh, you know the little paws are just covering is fingers, which are free to move, right?

Please explain what is pretend about Keytar playing the Keytar. I've seen him around, enjoyed the music, but never looked closely.

The double IPA will feature honey, lactose and vanilla. Four-packs will be sold at both breweries for $22.20.

( I certainly hope a large portion of that goes to Keytar Bear ! )

Should be all proceeds since they are using his image as marketing.

Thats not how branding works. Additionally Trillium is one of those few businesses that sell pretty much everything they make which gives them leverage in a program like this. Figure Keytar Bear get a portion of all sales, based on my experience in the food industry ~50 cents-$1 per 4 pack but probably more like .25 cents per 4 pack based on the players here.

Edit: All of this is wrong. Charity run is different than private label run.

Trillium tends to be quite generous when they do these things.

Typical "tribute" beer for them typically means that they kick back all the profits to the cause.

Alright, so I misread.

I see this is to raise money for Keytar Bears medical bills. Ignore my previous post. Was using my private label brain, not my charity brain.

Pretty much standard price for Trillium Beer. $3-5 a can is to be expected in the Trilliums TreeHouses and Bissel Brothers of the world.

Money well spent too.

First of all, you get a full pint of luscious fresh stuff.

Secondly, it is way cheaper than getting a draft pint of anything anywhere in the area.

My husband already scored two four-packs. Looking forward to enjoying a cold one when I get home.

Maybe a couple of bucks, tops. But, regardless of that, you should also know what you're getting into if you're looking to buy some Trillium beer.

Out of curiosity, to everyone loving this craft beer thing: does it ever irk you that people of color are largely shut out? Back when I was still somewhat curious about smaller brews, I was always taken aback at how in Boston a large group of people could come together and somehow be even more white than Bruins or Red Sox crowds. But that's your craft beer crowd for you.

I'm not doubting Boston's whiteness, but I'm curious what makes you say it about craft beer in particular. It seems to follow the general trend- depending on the area it's in, you'll see a different crowd (with areas like downtown being like 97% white or something crazy high, but go to Dorchester Brewing Co and it's more of a diverse group).

I totally didn't notice the whites only sign on the Trillium door. I'll pay closer attention next time.

too lazy to go get an eye roll emoji

Since it doesn't seem like the sort of activity where you need approval from other people who are doing it, is there a reason that POC can't break into it?

Well Malt beer had its own following too!

I think its unfortunate. But this isn't just a craft beer thing. There are zero restaurants with alcohol licenses in Mattapan. How many vineyards in America are owned by minorities?

I will say that craft beer has become more inclusive of women(see Pink Boots Society). I'm hearing less stories about bartenders or store clerks ignoring women or just assuming they want a fruit forward beer or cider.

No, Orson is white.

No, and it wasn't my question, either.

But really, I didn't realize how triggered some people would get by what is an honest question about the "scene". In my neighborhood there was a great bar that hosted people from all walks of life, which then closed and reopened as a beer-first spot. Needless to say it no longer is even close to representative of the community surrounding, as the cocktail-first bar was.

When Trillium had their winter beer garden in Roslindale (one of the more racially diverse neighborhoods in Boston), it was still a VERY white affair. Their beer is terrific, but it is expensive and that certainly excludes a large part of the community, disproportionately immigrants and people of color. (See Globe's Spotlight series on race and the $8 median net worth for non-immigrant African-American households).

I'm not suggesting there's anything malicious in their intent, or that they shouldn't be turning a nice profit on a great product. I'm just saying it is a very white scene.

Personally I love craft brews and rarely drink anything else. (I also enjoy visiting the various local breweries.)The original complaint was about the lack of POC on the business end. If you want to talk about lack of same on the purchasing side maybe we shouldn't wonder why someone doesn't want to spend top $ to drink on a someone's loading dock and play cornhole. The White thing may not be the beer itself.

This is easily the silliest comment I have read on the interwebz lately and that is saying something. Congrats!

People are bitching because a local brewery is helping out a guy that keeps getting the shit kicked out of him? Have you ever seen keytar bear play? Kids absolutely LOVE this guy. He brightens up people's day: young and old. I'll be picking up a 4-pack.
