Papa Gino's slices dozens of outlets

WCVB reports Dedham-based Papa Gino's closed dozens of branches today, at least in some cases with no advance notice to workers. And even as workers were finding out they had no job, the chain was tweeting out some promotion. Probably not a good idea.

I always wondered how they could afford the promotions they offered. 50% off pizzas. 50% online orders. Plus reward points. I'd walk out with an extra large specialty pizza for $3.

Guess they couldn't afford it.

I'm all for free markets. Everybody has a right to close stores. However, doing so with no notice to your employees is cruel. A little humanity, please.

What would necessitate closing that many stores at a moment's notice? It's like they didn't have the money to keep the lights on or something.

The news on this will be interesting.

A great way to get the state to investigate you. never mind you still have to pay your leases, so you're not saving a ton of money by closing now instead of (say) giving folks 2 weeks notice (or at least giving them 2 weeks of pay....)

seems relatively common in the food service/ restaurant industry.

I had a buddy in college who was a waiter at a mall restaurant. Corporate office called one day and said to stop seating people, and close after the seated lunch crowd cleared out. Game over.

The WARN Act is supposed to protect those workers. Dumping people without notice is complete BS. Those folks should band together and sue the shit out of them.

Maybe if Papa Gino's put a little effort into their infrastructure to bring their stores up to date this wouldn't have happened. Their food wasn't bad, but their restaurants were right out of the 80s.

Sometimes you believe you will get last minute funding (some do) so it doesnt make sense to make the troubles public.

Companies can't make money without their employees, but we don't give them any rights or protections in exchange for that work. Corporations are not people and they don't have any humanity. These people will get unemployment and that it. Most of these people weren't getting health care or any retirement from GINPOP, it is kind of silly to ask why they are cruel to their employees. they do it because they can, and that's how they make money.

I'm sorry to hear of job losses but in President Trump's economy they will be fine. There is a locally and family owned pizza parlor on every corner. I order pizza around once a month but always choose my local. Greeted by first name and handshake from the owners.

In many cases they can also make a nice chicken, brocolli, ziti dinner, chicken parm, wings, and salads with good toppings. I try to avoid the chains.

Much like the demise of retail, I think these restaurant chains are next unless they get their act together.

I live a short walk away from the Bertucci's in Newton Corner and we enjoy going there for food or just drinks at the bar. It's a nice place that often hosts teams staying the Crowne Plaza around the corner. As for Papa Gino's, I hadn't been in one in years and the only nearby outlet I knew of, in the Watertown Mall, usually looked empty. The Papa Gino's chain seemed as dated as Fretter or Caldor, it seems.

I've been to the Watertown one a few times and it never seemed to be busy, especially when Olde Country Buffet was open. Once OCB closed, Papa Ginos became even less busy.

Lord knows what's going to happen with the Arsenal Mall once that's rebuilt.

Only recently did I find out that OCB closed. It was what it was, but I liked having an all-you-can-eat place around. Now it a Chinese place or whatever charging $14.95 for fried rice. Where have all the buffets gone?

That was closed as of a few weeks ago. I wonder if the Watertown Street location survived?

Trump inherited the strong economy from Obama just like Trump inherited his money and business from his rich daddy.

If anything, I hear factory jobs are coming back any day now.

But I'm sure you know the unemployment rate in the manufacturing industry is 3.2% right? That's lower than the national average.

You also know that in the food service industry, the unemployment rate is down from about 7.5% when Trump took office in 1/17, to about 5% now right?

Decent food? It's barely food at all.

But, I'm still surprised they're closing locations. After all, this the town that loves Dunkin Donuts or whatever tf it's called now... DKNY or something.

and BTW, I have it on good word that this isn't Trump's Economy. Just yesterday I saw former president Obama on TV saying that he is responsible for today's economy. So, in Obama's economy, they'll be fine.

I must be in the minority, but I really like Papa Gino's pizza. I reminds me of the pizza places of my youth in Malden, with the thin crust and sweet tomato sauce. It appears that two of the three that I mostly have frequented are still open for now, with only the one in Walpole closed.

As far as being a chain goes, it's at least a locally-based chain, so I don't have any reservations about supporting them.

The current US economic growth is purely a continuation of the growth that started during the previous administration: https://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2017/6/21/saupload_GDP.png . Notice the nice straight upward sloping line since the crash of 2009. Thanks Obama!

No notice is bad enough, but apparently they didn't even bother to tell employees not to show up. People arrived for their shifts only to find their place of work shut down.

Did this to a store back home beside the one I managed; we had to let their store manger (yup, STORE MANAGER) use the phone to call corporate to ask why they were padlocked out. Pretty scummy.

Tangent - not sure what people around here like about Papa Gino's, it's OK at best; I think I'd rather have a DiGiorno.

I guess all of that property is protected from the bankruptcy.

In the US, the wealthy can declare bankruptcy and avoid paying people they owe money to, even if their workers have little money and they are rich. Look at what our president did repeatedly, a billionaire (he says) yet time and time again delcared bankruptcy to avoid paying working people the money he owed them.

Anyone can declare bankruptcy, either via the company they own, or personally. Should we not allow companies to restructure under bankruptcy?

I guess all of that property is protected from the bankruptcy.

You guessed wrong.

That means nothing without knowing their liabilities. They may be leveraged up to their necks.

They own all of those properties. The Papa Gino Properties are held by a foreign LLC. The value of some of those properties is astronomical. When we will see the filings?

Hey, your question was, how bankrupt could they be given the millions of dollars worth of real estate.

My answer was, they could be very bankrupt depending on their liabilities.

Maybe I'm wrong, but you seemed to imply that there is no way they could be bankrupt with all that real estate. That's wrong. Balance sheets have two sides. Their real estate holdings may be astronomical, but their liabilities may be even more so.
