Pioneering West Roxbury restaurant shutting down

Manny Sifnugel announced tonight he's shutting his Masona Grill on Corey Street in West Roxbury in July.

When Masona Grill opened in 2006, it was one of the first sit-down restaurants in West Roxbury that offered something other than Irish-American or Chinese-American fare or pizza - Peruvian/American fusion. Now the neighborhood has a variety of cuisines on offer.

Sifnugel writes: "It has been 25 years since I opened my first restaurant and I am spent."

fan of these folks in their long tenure at the Claremont Cafe in the South End, and penned a rave for Masona way back in 2006, when I was reviewing restaurants for Dig Boston (my first pro gig), where my self-set agenda was to bring attention to worthy restaurants in neighborhoods like West Roxbury that I felt were being ignored by other local professional critics.

Thanks for the memories, Masona. I hope we haven't seen the last of your soulful cooking. Boston needs more of your good indie work, fewer middlebrow chains. On a related note, fuck you, Seaport.

West on Centre - it's fine I guess.
Himalaya - delicious takeout, never ate in.
Tres Amigos - totally fine burritos if you aren't from California.
Squealing Pig - only went when it was the previous name and it was ok but way, way too slow. Loved the Pig on Mission Hill back in my youth
Various Thai places are all fine but meh (this is equally on me and them, Thai isn't my thing)
Tony's - always intrigued hoping for a Pleasant Cafe throw back type experience but never been.
Bertucci's - good option with kids or last minute
Bahn Mi N'Gon - cheap and tasty
Viva Mi Arepa - only went once, it was fine.

Liked Masona a lot but... almost never went there.

I hope he has some deserved rest after 35 years in the restaurant business. Truth be told I was never a fan of Masona. Thought the food was eh and the prices were high for the food. To be fair b/c of that we only went a few times and haven't been back in many years. Maybe it got better over the years.

Hopefully another restaurant will be able to go there - it is a great space.
