Love it! They are one of my favorites and brighten any place they can grow. You can't help but smile when you look up to one towering above you.
I like the Russian Mammoths, they are very tall with huge heads. Last year I measured one almost a foot across. At the end of the season it's a feast for birds and squirrels, just cut off the heads and let them at it.

I love this picture too, you just can't help but smile..

as I learned last year, when I was hoping to collect at least some seed. -.-

Look like all the other sunflowers I see going up around the city each summer. Can't we get some creativity in our flowers or is that a lost art in this current planting boom?

You're planning to go down to Home Depot this weekend, buy lots of seeds and hand them out yourself, I take it?

Yes. But that's after packaging and distributing 10,000 seeds from the employee-owned Johnny's Selected Seeds in Maine. Our goal was to distribute 3000 seeds. We are way past that and with articles like this (thank you Greg Cook/Wonderland and Universal Hub) we have more people wanting to take part.

If you're looking for varieties to hand out, I can recommend Hopi Dye (a dye sunflower with lovely reddish purple petals) and Inca Jewel.

ETA: I have a fair number of Hopi Dye seeds, but nowhere near 10,000. Hopefully my crops this year will escape the squirrels, and I'll be able to offer several thousand viable seeds to my neighbors. :-)

plants that have been sprayed with a solution of cayenne pepper. A neighbor suggested this after the squirrels demolished my tulips just as they were starting to bloom and I've used this method successfully ever since.

The squirrel kept eating them, blinking miserably. -.-

It probably works well if the squirrel hasn't already established that it's a delicious food source, and is just experimentally nibbling.

Yes but have you ever seen a red sunflower? 2000 seeds for that distributed. Let's wait and see. :-)
