Some white-hot Comm Ave. bridge action

Matt Wunderlich watched workers with welding torches disassemble parts of the westbound side of the Commonwealth Avenue bridge near the BU Bridge today:

Traffic disaster fans will be pleased to know that MassDOT is continuing to warn motorists of the dire results should they try to get anywhere near the area tomorrow.

Well, they read, 'hellmouth' on UH and decided, why not? They are called lances. Unlike bicycle related Lances, no dope involved.
They run O2 through a long tube and generate huge temps (like 5k *F) and a bunch of heat. Cuts through thick steel like butter. In this weather, tough work.

Those guys should be given trophys.

if this is why all of Brookline smelled like a cordite dream last night..... it was very faint, but there was something detectable in the air. another person on a walk stopped me and said "pardon me but is it a little hard to breathe out here?"

yeah just following up. I'm not complaining because I want a nice strong safe comm ave bridge, but i feel nasty today. my guess is that those oxygen torches spewed a lot of ozone gas over the st mary's st hill and across brookline....im not a scientist, just a guy with lungs, but blech
