When Beacon Hill had video stores

Maureen Rogers recalls Fred's Video on Charles Street, in the days before Netflix and streaming and stuff:

When you went on weekends, Fred’s - a tiny little place to begin with - was always crowded. Nabbing a movie before someone else got their hands on it always gave you a little feeling of triumph.

For what it's worth, the Boston Public Library (and I mean, most libraries) also allows you to borrow physical DVDs and CDs (as well as books, obviously). It's not a service I use much, but it can provide things you might not be able to find elsewhere, as well as just the physical experience of browsing a physical collection of DVDs.

The Cambridge Public Library does as well, and they're heavily used.

There used to be a record store on Beacon Hill too, in the late 70s. I can't remember the name, but it was near a boarding house (Beacon Chambers?) that burned down. It had a good selection of records by local bands who used to put out self produced 45s with homemade covers on them in the 70s.
