Alleged Cambridge car burglar gets punched in the face repeatedly - and is also arrested

Cambridge Police report a man about to use his girlfriend's car on Franklin Street to run an errand around 9 p.m. on Wednesday was startled to find some guy in the front seat, rummaging around:

Upon arrival, officers observed a male restraining the Defendant (John Chute, 39, homeless) on the ground. Officers discovered that the boyfriend of the vehicle owner was about to run an errand when he noticed Chute in the front seat of his girlfriend's vehicle. Chute was rummaging around the interior of the vehicle with an open pocket knife on his lap. Chute then began to move towards the boyfriend in a threatening manner - the boyfriend then struck Chute in the face several times and held him down until police arrived.

Chute was arrested and charged with breaking and entering a motor vehicle in the nighttime for a felony, police say.

Innocent, etc.

That's the correct way of handling a thief stealing shit from your or your GF's car. Lucky it wasn't her going out to the car. He could have hurt her.

Homelessness, attempted theft and assault... a real feel-good story!

The officers didn't discover that the boyfriend was about to run an errand.

They discovered two dudes, one knife, one bloody face, and one car. They later learned the claims of one of the two gentlemen.

I'm not arguing that this account of events isn't true, but let's be clear: the police don't get to determine what the truth of the situation is unless they see it themselves. Otherwise, it's just details of an investigation for someone else to determine truth.
