Boston Medical Center professionals protest Be Best visit, but say they are really sending a message to hospital patients

BMC protesters say they care

Some 200 Boston Medical Center doctors, nurses and other staffers stood in front of Boston Medical Center today, in what they said was a protest against a visit by two representatives of a homophobic and anti-immigrant federal government but more important and a message to patients that hospital staffers will do whatever it takes to protect them from an administration determined to get rid of them.

"We're here to provide a safe place for them," Dr. Sara Stulac, a BMC pediatrician, said.

Stulac and other protesters stood on a lawn on the Harrison Avenue side of Boston Medical Center. The hospital barred reporters from going on the lawn to talk to protesters, but several walked over to the reporters gathered on a sidewalk.

Eduardo Garza, a family-medicine and psychiatry resident, agreed that the key message from the protest is one to patients: That they can continue to come to BMC for care and that he and others will treat them without question.

"There's a big fear that our patients are not going to feel safe," he said, adding some immigrant patients have already shown signs of anxiety that they might be targeted by the federal government and deported.

Dr. Kelley Saia, an OB/Gyn and director of a program that helps new mothers with substance-abuse problems, said she was particularly frustrated because the visit by Trump and her husband's secretary of health and human services - focusing on a program that seeks to help the babies, was leaving out the mothers, who are just as important to the babies' futures as anything the hospital can do for them.

"You can't have a healthy baby without a healthy mom," she said.

and her Medicare for All plan will wipe out 2 million healthcare jobs and lower the wages of Doctors and Nurses. Wonder if they will protest that or just keep working.
Liz said it is simple the people who work in the Medical Insurance companies and hospitals, they could just work in the Life or Auto Insurance industry???? Makes sense but who will have the money to buy Life insurance or even Automobiles ( oh we will all be riding bikes by then).

Can “if Liz Warren” cite sources? You seem to have a more clear plan than she does.
And I’m not stumping first her either. I just want to see what ya got.

Answer the damn question. Asking rhetorical nonsense bullshit doesn't answer the damn question.

represents an important values-shift in this country that is totally compatible with real capitalism, just not the exploitative psychotic variety so many have come to accept.

it IS unfortunate that people who have chosen to work in an exploitative, anti-human industry might lose their jobs. that IS sad, especially because many of them do not have the moral compass to really comprehend what they are involved in. confused, unemployed people should concern us--they bear some responsibility for having wanted to work in the ponzi scheme--we bear some responsibility to make sure they have healthcare via medicare for all.

What do you mean most of post a complete lie?? What part of it is the truth?? I hope none of it. But she said it.

You're citing the Washington Examiner and Faux News?

There are still covering up for Jussie Smollet , Epstein, Lauer, Weinstein all the other.
I love Don Lemon, Cuomo, and Cooper. Nobody watches CNN anyway..

What would those 3 have in common with anybody.

has too many ingredients, man. who the hell is still using Jussie Smollett as a reference any more?

in a while. Your brain is clearly suffering from oxygen deprivation.

Unless your point is to cite Fox News unironically for the amusement of all and sundry? Because nobody with a scintilla of critical thinking skills swallows that utter bullshit whole. You might as well get a tattoo in tall red letters that says "GULLIBLE DUMBASS" on your forehead.

the word DUMBASS, lol

Would be a perfectly fine newspaper to cite. But if we're talking about the economic effects of new policy and taxes then I think the work of economists might be better. This is pretty wonky stuff (and also incredibly boring to read) so any real argument would be a bit over my head and certainly over the head of reporters from the times, cnn, fox, the wsj and most other media outlets. It's probably likely that smart economists could make arguments favoring two different policies. What's the joke about economists?... "on the one hand _____ on the other hand ____"

Clearly the doctors in countries with universal healthcare for all are all struggling for pay. Know who will have the money for life insurance or automobiles? The folks that don't have to pay a surprise $300 bill for blood work at a physical, or nearly $900k for a premature birth.

But they do shell out over half of their income in taxes, and that’s in places with small and healthy populations.

I'm sure you were against Obamacare and its subsequent growth of the healthcare industry, just as you are now against a baseless claim that Warren's plan will somehow "wipe out" 2 million healthcare jobs (a claim for which you failed to cite any factual evidence). Sorry you got triggered by this article, snowflake.

Paying attention to details is key here. She is talking people who work at healthcare insurers. The people at Blue Cross, Harvard Pilgrim, etc. Not doctors and nurses. At BMC maybe the army of people that have to work with insurers to get bills paid will be let go. But that just means more money for clinical needs, not admins.

Are you still in a tizzy? I’ve worked on the admin side of healthcare for 29 years. It’s a mess, with tons of waste just because of the headaches with billing and insurance. Go Elizabeth Warren!

I find all "First Lady Initiatives" a gimmick, but what's the problem here? Is she calling ICE to patrol Boston hospitals? I've reread your article three times, and I don't see exactly what they are protesting.

Any of it?

People explained what they have a problem with. Are you having a problem with them having a problem?

The Trump administration is engaged in an increasingly bitter war against both immigrants and LGBTQ - not Melania directly perhaps, but certainly HHS Secretary Azar, who was also on the trip.

Just last week, the Washington Post reported: Proposed HHS rule would strip Obama-era protections for LGBTQ individuals. Granted, the issue there was adoption, not medical care, but, really, it wouldn't be too hard to find examples more directly related to people getting care at BMC (both LGBTQ and immigrants).

Now Boston Medical Center, which serves these communities has invited these Trump-administration people in. It doesn't just highlight a valuable program the hospital is providing but provides a boost to the Trump administration - look, they care! Only they don't.

So hospital staffers are protesting any seeming connection with people who would harm their patients.

Now THAT'S a reliable new source - NOT. Sheesh...

They are protesting that a representative of an administration that has hurt children in numerous ways, from cutting back on programs that feed them and provide health care, to tearing them away from their parents and caging them at the border, is showing up to cuddle babies for photo ops. Not too hard to understand, really.

Why you don't want to mention Dr. Carson by name is beyond me.

up

A "Dr. Carson" is not secretary of HHS.

up

Maybe Alex Azar told Adam not to mention Ben Carson.

up

And it took me until 15 minutes ago to remember that Carson is at HUD.

Still, if Adam had only mentioned his name, I wouldn't look as stupid as I do on this. Perhaps it's like saying "Biggie Smalls" in a mirror three times, except that Azar still showed up.

"We're here to provide a safe place for them,"

As are federal immigration authorities... a safe place for everyone in their country of citizenship or permanent residence.

They should all be fired.

up
Voting closed 0

Firing a bunch of skilled doctors definitely won't disrupt patient care at all! I'm sure they can easily be replaced on a moment's notice.

up
Voting closed 1

The deep care they express for their patients leads me to conclude that they are most certainly not on duty during their protest. None of them are supposed to be anywhere else providing care to anyone else.

The Secret Service probably cleared every person out of the area that they possibly could

Really? Trump may be a lot of things but not anti-LGBTQ.

“Watch what I say, not what I do.”

Like proclaim to love Jews, but then coddle Nazis. Or brag about his gay friends, but then choose a raging homophobe as his veep. Or claim he’ll eliminate the debt.... FFS, do I have to go on? This could take hours.

I guess you really are that dumb.

Your Dear Leader is most definitely anti-T when it comes to military service, healthcare access and protection against housing discrimination. As for good old fashioned homophobia, his "Justice" Department is quite active in trying to protect employers who fire workers for being gay.

up

He's literally working to ensure that discrimination against LGBTQ people is legal.

Seems like an important fact in order to understand the reason to protest it as homophobic and anti-immigrant.

Don't let your personal viewpoint get in the way of publishing facts.

My apologies - I made the mistaken assumption that the whole "Be Best" thing was fairly well known. If you Google the phrase, you'll find links that explain it.
