If you want to know what's happening on the streets of Boston

After yesterday's shooting/standoff up the street from us, here's my new news hierarchy:

First, check Channel 4 and Wicked Local (the latter is where I first read about the shootings). Chances are, they'll have the news first (however, Wicked Local only covers Roslindale, West Roxbury and Allston/Brighton).

The next day, check the Herald. They'll likely have photos and a lot of details (in this case, the more seriously injured person's name - which the paper got from his grandmother - and details about the SWAT team being called in).

Then, if you're really bored, check the Globe, where, if you're lucky, you'll get a desultory story that reads as if the reporter never even left his desk.

But the reporter got confused, and found
himself on Beach Street, in Chinatown...seems
that they may be using the same dispatch system
as the Boston Police.

Also checkout parkwayclick.com - the news feeds include local news as soon as it hits the internet, so the Wicked Local story showed up right away yesterday.

Is there a problem with the UHub RSS feed for West Roxbury? These are the posts tagged with West Roxbury.

Only the last post listed here, Marian Walsh, is on the RSS feed.

I've been playing with the look of category pages and that may have screwed things up (since the module that handles that also deals with RSS feeds). I'll take a look.

UHub is the even more wicked local than wicked local so I rely on it.

The RSS is working here now, but I've learned that doesn't necessarily mean it'll work for everybody, so let me know if it's not for you.

I'll let you know either way.

We won't know until you post something with a 'West Roxbury' tag... or perhaps re=post something but I wouldn't mess with that unless you did it before without a problem.

specifically channels 5, 7, 25, and NECN?

Had something up relatively quickly, so yay for them.

NECN had something up last evening - they showed the three suspects being led away (and showed the disconcerting sight of a SWAT vehicle driving down the same street I use to get home).

I will admit I don't tend to check Channels 7 or 25.

7 broke the story and usually does (hence the "first on 7" betas excessively plastered throughout the newscasts) their website tends to be a wee slower.
fox is also good about breaking the "crime" stories... especially on the website.
you probably aren't going to get many details on the story from either of these stations, but they are quick... that tends to be their M-O...

I could tell something was going on as I drove around Rosi but couldn't find anything on the radio. I'm not terribley familiar with the AM dial, are there any live/local news stations left in Boston?

You have two choices: WBZ-AM 1030, or WBUR-FM 90.9. For a breaking crime news story like this, I'd stick with WBZ. I have no idea how well they did, though.

Alas, I was too busy playing the same Evanescence CD over and over on the way home ...
