The South End..
More specifically, Harrison Avenue and East Newton Street. If you look below the Coca Cola sign, the old Washington Street Elevated is visible in the distance. To the left of that, there's a large building with what appear to be fire escapes (which aren't there today), which is probably the "new" part of the Franklin Square House (aka St. Elsewhere), and beyond that in the distance is a block of buildings on West Newton St facing Blackstone Square, distinctive because of its Dutch gabled roof and dormers (which is what really gave it away to me). At the extreme right side of the photo, the westernmost corner of the former Joshua Bates School is visible. It took me a while to figure it out because the building containing the sandwich shop, as well as the buildings across the public alley behind the Bates School are gone today, but I live about a block away from there and the view up E Newton St is very familiar.
South End Location
You got it spot on!
Ella,
by any chance, would your last name be Menopy?
(Oh, and serious props to Neal)
You saw what?
Neal you must have x-ray vision (or a very good magnifying glass!) Aside from the building and the Coke sign, I didn't see any of the detail that you mention.

Impressive
Wow. You know your hood!
Neal has it exactly pretty
Neal has it exactly pretty amazing, looking west on East Newton Street at the corner of Harrison Ave, could be a Dodge convertible there on Harrison Ave I'm going to say the photo is late 60s.
After all these years
I'm curious: Does the Boston City Archives ask us to place the scene because they need our help, or is this a game?
The latter (probably)
The "yes, you're right" responses are a bit too definitive for the former, unless they're being super sneaky.
Plus, there was one occasion where they said they didn't know the answer when they posted the photo.
Mostly a game
There have been a couple of times where they've asked for help identifying something or someone, but mostly they're just posting interesting photos they already have IDs for.
Thanks for playing, folks!
Thanks for playing, folks! This photo shows 48 E Newton Street and was taken on March 2, 1961.
Usually, we know the date and location of our mystery photos, but as Adam said, a couple of times we've crowd-sourced locations that we couldn't pin down. Uhub commenters and our twitter/fb followers are a wealth of Boston information!
