Student unleashes pepper spray in Roslindale school cafeteria - 12 students, 1 adult taken to the hospital for observation

A student at the Washington Irving Middle School on Cummins Highway in Roslindale sprayed a canister of pepper spray in the school cafeteria around 11 a.m., a Boston Public Schools spokesperson reports.

Some 12 students and one school staffer were taken to local hospitals as a precaution, BPS reports, adding all have since been released.

The building was evacuated for more than 30 minutes. Students then returned to the building* and remained in the auditorium until fire officials determined it was OK for everyone to return to class. Classes are continuing as scheduled.

The student with the OC "will be disciplined according to the BPS Code of Conduct," the spokesperson says.

In addition to middle-school students, the school this year is housing high-school students from the former West Roxbury Academy and Urban Science Academy, which closed at the end of the past school year. Some of those students had a previously approved early dismissal today, unrelated to the pepper spraying, BPS says.

How did "pepper spray go off?"

Pepper spray is nasty stuff on adults. Can't imagine how bad it is for kids.

“Pepper spray went off”

The past exonerative construct appears yet again

At the time of the initial reports, nobody on the outside (i.e., reporters) knew how the spray was unleashed.

I've just updated the post - turns out a student sprayed the stuff.

This did turn out to be intentional, but if you go to places where the local fauna make it wise to carry bear spray while taking out the garbage, many families have stories about when so-and-so was a teen and had a little misadventure.

The bad news: Some kid had a beef and shot another kid with pepper spray.

The good news: He used pepper spray instead of a knife or gun.

We just need to arm all teachers with pepper spray. That'll surely solve the problem, right?

The poor kid was probably defending himself against bullying. Last week at Forest Hills station there were several fights.

Do you have any actual knowledge?

What's wrong with using your fists to defend yourself?

When the millennials were in high school, they fought at Forest Hills.

Alas, us Gen-Xers didn't fight at Forest Hills, but I can tell you stories of fights breaking out at Ashmont and Andrew (on the platform, mind you) back in my days. As for the boomers, Forest Hills in their day was not conducive to fighting. For some reason I read that Egleston was a station for that. Weird.

At catholic school we would fight in the Church yard at the rocks behind the stained glass window OR at the snake yard Behind the black church. Didn’t matter if you were a boy or girl. If you showed up, you fought.
No lie. 4L vs 4J or 4M vs ...oh imagine the combinations! We were badAss.

"Boomer."

Modern term to denote contempt for a person over a specific age. Usually targeting someone deemed to be a member of the "Baby Boomer" generation. Someone over the age of 50 (and older) usually.

A term that is dismissive and issued as a form of contempt.

Its emergence parallels terms of contempt for various cultures and races.

Ya think?

Forgive my ignorance, but has the word "boomer", once a neutral term to describe a specific generation, morphed into a specifically derogatory term? Is it now to be considered exclusively negative? This seems to keep happening in recent years. I recall when the word "thug" was used to describe, well, THUGS, i.e. "Whitey Bulger type people", you might say. But it seems it has now transformed into a racial slur when I wasn't looking. Apparently words change meaning pretty fast these days.

But I think it was invented for people like Swirly. An "ok boomber" response to 99% of Swirly's posts would be spot on.

FTR, I was born in the birth dearth years that characterize Gen-X. I've been snarking at "the ME generation" since I first started reading Coupland.

So, um, no.

It isn't so much your age. It's your condescending "i'm better than you attitude". You are exactly what this phrase is about. Kinda surprised you haven't made Urban Dictionary yet.

Person 1: I just went outside it is very raw and wet. I might put on a warmer coat so I don't get a cold.

Swirrly: You can't get a cold just because your body gets wet. Back in Oregon I used to play all the time in the trailer park during rain storms and fired my grandfather's gun into the clouds because his uncle invented clouds. You should read up on what actually makes people sick.

Person 1: Ok boomber

Better than your constant excusing anything/everything cops do with condescending "copsplaining" ala the testalying you were trained to do on the clock.

You don't go to hell for having a lot of life experience while being female. You do go to hell for lying and getting paid for lying.

I put cops in jail Swirly. You don't. You live life on the sidelines and you hate yourself probably a little less than people hate you.

I'd hate to know what you think of black people and minorities if you go by the stereotypes that you are trying to pin on me. I doubt you know any so I guess that makes us all safer.

If we sound dismissive and contemptuous of the Boomer generation, it is because we are in fact dismissive and contemptuous of, while not the first generation to fail to fix the world, certainly the first to continue to insist long after the fact that they did.

A generation is not an entity capable of either acting or of making claims about what it did or did not do, or of holding opinions, any more than a race is.

So possession of pepper spray by a juvenile & spraying it in a school, sending 12 to the hospital, is in no way a police matter? Strictly a BPS discipline matter? I’m not saying throw the book at the kid, but how do you pretend 2 crimes aren’t just that?

That BPS was quoted about its disciplinary rules doesn't mean that police are not free to bring charges (in this case in juvenile court). My apologies for not checking with BPS on this.
