The Boston Fire Department reports firefighters responded to 208 Willow St. in West Roxbury around 9 a.m. for a two-alarm fire that did an estimated $500,000 in damage.

The department reports an off-duty firefighter spotted the smoke from the fire, kicked in the door and rescued the house's resident - and two resident parakeets.

One firefighter was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, the department says.

Looks like a birdcage in the front of the photo. Hope all the people got out as well.

It says so right in Adam's write-up.

Thank you, off-duty fire fighter!

The pet parakeet was saved.

So was the person residing in that house. Glad both the person and his pet parakeet were saved.

My uncle told me that West Roxbury and Charlestown are the only two neighborhoods in Boston without a dedicated fire chief. He said it was political retribution by Menino against those neighborhoods from years ago.
