Coronavirus knocks out Topsfield Fair

The Essex Agricultural Society announced today it's canceled the Topsfield Fair, originally scheduled for this October.

Since its start in 1818, the fair has been canceled in 1918, due to the Spanish Flu, and between 1943 and 1945, due to World War II.

Maybe they were holding out hope a bid development would happen but I agree. I can't imagine a socially distanced fair. I've never been, the one time I was supposed to go I was 13 going with my friends family but the line to just get off the highway was so intense we kept going and went to the Rockingham Mall.

As someone who goes every year, there’s no way to make it safe. We weren’t going to go anyway, as much as it sucks with how much my kid and I love going.

You know what they say; only two things come out of Topsfield: steers and failed politicians.

For those who can't go a year without visiting my fine hometown, I hear they're doing a drive-in at the fairgrounds. Don't know how often or the specifics, but might be old-fashioned fun.

Did you know there used to be dog races at the fairgrounds? Depressing.

I can't believe it, no fair this year. I'll deeply miss the rides, the food and looking at the sexy sheep.

I feel bad for the gourd growers who've slaved all year to grow the largest pumpkin ever.

I would think some of this stuff could be virtual? Have the judges visit the top contenders with a portable scale... They could really make it into a show. I know I'd watch!

What was the name of the fair they used to have at Suffolk Downs?

Worst Hotdog I ever had was at that fair. Tasted like sawdust was an ingredient.

That being said; The enthusiasm of the young farmers was palatable. I swear a 7 year old I met there back then is currently handling my bacon supply.

Even before the Pandemic I was missing meetings like that. Fairs and Carnivals are essential.

The Skowhegan State Fair, "The Nation’s Oldest Consecutively Running Agricultural Fair," recently announced that they're going mostly virtual this year, in order to keep their title intact.

I am not familiar with the Marshfield Fair, so I probably remembered wrong.

I was at the Topsfield Fair once, must have been at least 35 years ago. I only remember two things about it:

Best French Fries I ever had in my life. They had a kind of butter flavor but were still crisp. Butter added to the oil maybe? Never tasted anything like that since.

I almost got run down by a horse cart in the parking lot. Two of the biggest horses I ever saw -- giant Percherons or Clydesdales maybe? They were hitched to a cart of some kind, galloping crazily, while the driver was standing up desperately trying to rein them in -- but how could you control horses that powerful if they're spooked? I had to hurl myself backwards onto a parked car to avoid being creamed.

Maybe the two memories are connected? Horses smelled the Fries and nothing was going to stop them getting some?
