Mass Health Council Announces Social Media Contest for Middle and High Schoolers during COVID-19

The Massachusetts Health Council (MHC) announced today a social media video contest for middle and high schoolers on how to stop the spread of COVID-19. This contest allows teens the opportunity to use their creativity and ingenuity while practicing social distancing and self-isolation by using apps like TikTok, Instagram and Youtube. MHC is offering a $500 prize to the winning individuals or teams.

Using MA DPH COVID-19 guidelines, students are being asked to help “flatten the curve” by creating a video to educate their peers. Social media is a great medium, and kids, sidelined from their routines, are well positioned to take on this challenge.

“The Health Council is made up of health, business, academic and civic organizations that have come together for the past 100 years to promote prevention, shape health policy and address health crises when they arise. This is one more example of MHC thinking ‘out of the box’ to get our young people involved while we all do what we can to confront this health crisis,” said Helene Solomon, MHC board member and Founder & Co-President, Solomon McCown & Cence.

The contest period has begun and will extend through Monday, April 13th with the winning submission announced on April 17th, 2020. MHC sees an opportunity for students to engage in a positive way as they cope with an uncertain future.

“We have always been committed to advocating on behalf of critical health concerns in Massachusetts-- from the early issues of vaccines and fluoridation, to the seat belt law and our work with Governor Baker on the opioid crisis, to our current focus on COVID-19,” said MHC’s CEO David Martin. “In this 100th year, we are so proud of the work MHC has done and continues to do. This contest is a positive way to engage students around health at this unprecedented time in history and we hope the media will help us get the word out so that students from across the state will have the same opportunity to participate.”
