Baker calls out National Guard to drive school vans

Gov. Baker today activated the National Guard to get ready to drive school vans in cities that have been hard hit by driver shortages: Chelsea, Lynn, Lawrence and Lowell. Some 90 National Guard members will start training in driving the vans tomorrow.

I don't remember the Guard being activated during the school busing crisis. I'm so glad the Boston school buses and the MBTA are getting the kids to school safely and on time.

a school bus driver shortage following an 18 or so month long period in which children were unable to attend their schools fully in-person?

Most of the bus drivers were over 60 and a lot retired during covid. Are they experiencing shortages due to retirements. It was a job that people who say drove a T bus and could retire then get a job driving a school bus. Did they just decide it was not worth it any longer?
