The Crimson reports Cambridge is looking to hire a rodent control liaison to coordinate city efforts to do something, anything, about a rising tide of rat complaints.
I feel like this is a department a few local cities can do as a regional thing with rats being such a big issue all over Greater Boston. I am not sure if every city needs a rat czar but the region could use one
Agree, at the very least it seems like Cambridge/Somerville/Medford would want to coordinate their approach. It's not like rats understand things like city limits.
Here's what I don't understand. We have squirrels. We have many more squirrels than rats (that are visible, anyway.) But, we don't see dead squirrels everywhere. I never have to shovel one off my lawn.
Yet rats.. they die all over. I wouldn't even mind them so much if they didn't do that on my lawn all the time. Why do they come to my yard to die!?!?
There's a two family next to me with an out-of-town landlord.. also, partially contributing to the rat problem. They always have trash spilling out everywhere around their barrels. They also keep two black boxes that look like rat traps over there, but maybe they just distribute the poison? I don't know much - I moved to a house after being in a 22 unit condo building for over a decade that had no green areas. I thought they were traps...
I'd just rather they not poison them. Clean up the trash. Clean up construction debris, the discarded fridge from the driveway, etc. The backyard looks like they were building something and just gave up one day, ten years ago. Then, let weeds grow all over it. It's the only multi-family on the block that bad, though. Oops.. I went off topic..

Arlington had a big rat problem
about two years ago, but I haven't heard that much about rats since the coyotes arrived. Any neighboring towns, like Cambridge, want some of them?
Magoo sez
Magoo luvs rat burgers. Magoo
Maybe Cambridge should figure out
why all the rats are complaining.
Rat King
I guess Rat Czar is better than Rat King (don't look that up if you are at all squeamish).
Yes
There's a reason I used "czar" instead of "king".
Rat King is arguably more
Rat King is arguably more festive. He's in the Nutcracker.
I think he's too busy
chasing teenagers through the sewers
Maybe they should see if the BSO can spare a few pipers?
(or do you have to send off to Germany to get the real thing?)
They die all over my yard
Not a Cambridge resident, but same issue.

People aren't trying to poison Squirrels
Rat poison why you see rats dead everywhere.
One of your neighbors is putting out poison
Be on the lookout for dead cats, dogs, and raptors as well.
I think I know which neighbor

Black boxes are not traps but
Black boxes are not traps but poisoned bait. It is used all over the city even by respectably looking buildings.
