Centre Street in West Roxbury closed when motorcyclist, car crash

Motorcycle down on Centre Street

A crash on Centre Street near Park Street in West Roxbury shortly after 1:30 p.m. sent both drivers to the hospital, at least one with injuries serious enough to have the homicide unit summoned just in case.

It's the second bad crash involving a motorcycle on Centre Street in two days. Yesterday, a motorcyclist and a US Postal Service truck crashed near Farquahar Street in the Roslindale stretch of the road.

The day before there was a motorcycle accident in Roslindale at Centre St and Farquhar where there is a bike lane. Having a bike lane or not having a bike lane probably had nothing to do with either accident.

We have right wing maniacs like fascist-adjacent Hal Shurtleff of the John Birch Society agitating against the “road diet” (scary!!!) which would save lives and make the neighborhood far more pedestrian and people-friendly.

I have had numerous run-ins over the years with Hal Shurtleff and the John Birch Society and I am certain that Hal recognizes me as one of the Birch Society's most prolific critics.

However, to characterize Hal as in any way, shape, or form "fascist" is a maliciously false accusation.

Incidentally, the Birch Society's conception of a political spectrum places fascism on the LEFT side along with liberalism, socialism, communism --- all of which the JBS considers "collectivism" and "statism" --- which they despise. Just another reason why linking Hal to fascism is an absurdity on its face.

We need to find legitimate ways to make criticism without descending into hyperbolic and malicious falsehoods.

You need a lesson in the political spectrum. Fascists like Nazis and Communists are on the left side of the political spectrum. A large percentage of West Roxbury citizens were against the so-called road diet. It is absurd to blame an accident on me or anyone else opposed to "road diets.'

I had no idea that Hal Shurtleff was powerful enough to single handedly dictate the use of roads and other public utilities in the West Roxbury area. I have had several conversation with Mr. Shurtleff over a period of decades. He is about as close to being a fascist as North Korea is to being a constitutional republic.

I was sorry to hear of this tragic accident but to blame it on me and those who are against the so-called "road diet" is malicious. If you think road diets are safe, do a little research on the increase in the deaths of bicyclists who think they are saving the planet as they ride on roads not designed for bikes.

Dan needs a lesson on the political spectrum. Fascists, like Nazis (National Socialists) and Communists are all on the Left.

It is my understanding that a good percent of the people of West Roxbury and members of the business community opposed the "road diet." According to Dan's "reasoning", they all must be "right wing maniacs" and 'fascists."

Every time I drive on Centre St. now, I think about how much easier and safer it would be if it was one travel lane in each direction with a turning lane in the middle and bike lanes on the side. The way it is now, you veer left to avoid a stopped bus, veer right to avoid a left-turner, veer left for a bicyclist, then veer left for a parking car or the double-parked UPS truck. It’s the least safe road in Southwest Boston I can think of.

How would that change with the road diet? Buses would still stop in the middle of the travel lane, so cars will still swerve outward; with just one turn lane, this is likely to lead to a collision with a vehicle in the opposite direction. Yes, it’s technically not allowed and is unsafe, but let’s face it: are drivers really going to wait for the 3-4 minutes it takes to board/offload a bus rider in a wheelchair, which happens quite frequently?

…unless, of course, the city carries out its planners’ original proposal, which is to eliminate a number of bus stops along Centre St — a proposal that would hurt the predominantly POC, low-income bus riders (read: people who work, but don’t live in, Westie).

that’s a terrible idea. traffic is already bad enough we don’t need to change it to one lane and a bunch of left turn lanes. no thank you it’s already congested enough.

take a look at norwood center, rt 1A. more frequent red lights which give each of those red light blocks time for pedestrians crossing, buses loading cars to park. Take a look at Needham st Newton much safer.

I regret to inform that the motorcyclist passed away. He was a co worker of mine and was on his way to work at btd (Boston transportation department) his name was James and he was a wonderful person. His smile would brighten anyone’s day and was always full of happiness and joy. You will truly be missed Jamie.
